This recruitment will establish an eligible list to fill current and future Environmental Health Technician II positions within the Health Care Agency. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.

PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICES Public Health Services (PHS)is a multi-dimensional department that includes Communicable Disease Control, Public Health Lab, Environmental Health, Community & Nursing Services, Clinical Services, and Health Promotion & Community Planning. Through assessment, policy development and assurance, PHS provides a wide range of services aimed at reducing death and disability by reducing the transmission of communicable diseases, preventing and lessening the impact of chronic diseases, and ensuring healthy and safe environments.
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH SERVICES Environmental Health Services (EHS)is comprised of various programs aimed toward protecting the health and safety of Orange County residents and visitors from harmful conditions in the environment. Staff enforce laws and regulations and emphasize education to assist businesses and communities with providing healthy and safe communities. Services include retail and wholesale food inspection, foodborne illness investigations, public pool inspections, childhood lead exposure prevention, water quality, ocean water protection, solid waste facility oversight, hazardous materials surveillance and mitigation oversight, underground and aboveground storage tank oversight, body art facility and practitioner oversight, medical waste management inspections and a used oil recycling education program.
THE OPPORTUNITY The Environmental Health Technician II (EHT II) serves a significant purpose in assisting Environmental Health Specialists and Hazardous Materials Specialists in performing a variety of tasks associated with the inspection and enforcement of environmental health laws.
Duties and Responsibilities- Responding to and managing requests from the public including operators, agencies and clients
- Creating educational materials and providing information about Environmental Health (EH) programs
- Assisting in reviewing permit applications to ensure all general requirements are met
- Utilizing internal and external databases to collect data and generate reports
- Maintaining field equipment, supplies, and similar inventory and assets
- Assisting environmental health programs in routine inspections, field work, and special projects
- Some positions may include fieldwork and require reliable transportation to travel to various community sites
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS & CORE COMPETENCIES The ideal candidate will have some knowledge about environmental health or experience and/or training in an environmental health setting, and experience providing administrative support using Microsoft Office or similar applications. In addition, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong customer service skills, including direct interaction with the public.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess extensive knowledge and/or experience in the following competencies:

- Reviewing permit applications or blueprints and plans for compliance with codes and regulations
- Maintaining and managing relevant information by creating documents, spreadsheets, and other related materials using current computer systems and programs
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other related computer systems, with strong data entry skills
- Familiar with operating standard office equipment and following established office policies and procedures
Customer Focus | Building & Maintaining Relationships - Assisting customers by responding and providing general information in person and over the telephone
- Interacting with customers in a professional and courteous manner
- Collaborating and building relationships with community partners, internal staff, and other county programs
