Position Description
Kickstart your engineering career with the City of Fresno! As an Engineer I, you’ll gain hands-on experience in civil, mechanical, structural, or traffic engineering, assisting with design, surveys, construction, research, or project management. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
•Assist with civil, mechanical, structural, or traffic engineering projects under close supervision
•Perform engineering computations, cost estimates, and prepare plans and specifications
•Assist in reviewing construction documents for compliance with local, state, and building codes
•Help with traffic studies, accident analysis, and operational or planning surveys
•Create and review legal descriptions, prepare as-built drawings, and reduce survey notes
•Collaborate on the design and development of public infrastructure projects (e.g., roads, sewer lines, traffic signals)
•Provide input on traffic flow, parking, and roadway design for development projects
•Review subdivision maps, permits, and construction plans for compliance with safety and accessibility standards
•Perform advanced civil design work and project management for DPU projects, including water treatment, wastewater facilities, and pipeline systems, depending on assignment.
•Prepare feasibility studies, technical reports, construction documents, and oversee consultants on outsourced projects, depending on assignment.

Incumbents in the Engineer I class may be promoted to the Engineer II class upon successful completion of the probationary period, one year of experience in the Engineer I class and recommendation of the appointing authority. The current salary range for Engineer II is $8,579 to
$10,429/mo.

The current vacancy exists in the Public Utilities Department. Immediate and future vacancies will be filled from this eligible list for a period of three (3) months from the date the eligible list is created, with the option of extending that period for up to a maximum of two years at the City's discretion. If the examination process is suspended for this recruitment, the eligible list may be limited to three (3) months.
The Requirements
Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications on or before the posted filing deadline in order to qualify for the examination and does not assure a place on the eligibility list.
Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Civil, Mechanical, Structural, Environmental, Electrical, Traffic Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or closely related field;
OR
Possession of an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) Certification issued by the State of California Board of Professional Land Surveyors, and Geologists;
OR
Possession of a National Council of Architectural Registration Board (NCARB) Certificate or valid license as an Architect by the State of California Architects Board.

AND/OR CERTIFICATE/LICENSE (instructions below on how to attach documents). Applications lacking the attachment may be rejected.
Applicants who are on track to graduate within the next sixty (60) days are encouraged to apply and will be invited to the examination process. However, a confirmation letter or a copy of transcripts from your college or university must show that the majority of your degree units have been completed at the time of application, and that your Bachelor’s Degree will be conferred within sixty (60) days of the recruitment deadline. In addition, proof of degree must be provided by the time of appointment.
Failure to provide proof of a conferred degree will result in removal from consideration for the Engineer I position. This timeline may be extended at the discretion of the Personnel Director.
Some assignments prefer Civil Engineering degrees.
Additional Requirements
Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required at the time of appointment. Candidates considered for hire will be required to provide proof of a valid driver's license and the current copy of their driving record.
The selected eligible candidates certified will be required to successfully pass a department interview and a Department of Justice fingerprint prior to employment with the City of Fresno.
The Selection Process
The examination process may consist of the following:
WRITTEN EXAMINATION - (100%): A job-related written/online examination may be conducted online to assess a candidate's knowledge which may include, but is not limited to, the following areas: surveying, maps, construction materials and practices, terms and definitions, engineering, mathematical computations, interpersonal skills, and safety.
Candidates must achieve a passing score to qualify for the eligible list.

Veteran’s Preference

HEALTH REIMBURSEMENT ARRANGEMENT (HRA)
Eligible retirees can use the remaining Sick Leave balance, in excess of 240 hours, at 80% of hourly rate and other qualified leave balances, tax free, to reimburse health insurance premiums and other qualified medical expenses.
RETIREMENT - City of Fresno Retirement Systems, one of the best funded public systems in the state. Reciprocity with other public California systems. Vested in Retirement benefits after 5 years of service. City employees do not participate in Social Security.
DROP (Deferred Retirement Option Program): an optional, voluntary program that allows an employee to deposit retirement benefits in a special savings account within the Retirement System while continuing to work for the City of Fresno for up to 10 years. Participation minimum is age 50 and vested. Benefits include ownership of accumulated funds, compound interest earnings, and alternative distribution options.
