Why this role matters
The Deputy Director of Operations is responsible for the daily safety, stability, and operational integrity of a correctional facility that serves people in custody, staff, and the broader Kansas City community.
This role exists to ensure that operations run calmly, consistently, and humanely-especially during high-risk situations. Your leadership directly affects life safety, staff confidence, legal compliance, and public trust.
This is not a hands-off role. It is for a leader who understands that strong correctional operations are built through preparation, accountability, and clear decision-making when it matters most.
What you'll do
You'll lead core operations with authority, clarity, and consistency.
- Lead daily correctional security operations to ensure safe, humane, and legally compliant custody
- Oversee staffing and deployment, including shift coverage, post assignments, and operational adjustments across housing, intake, and transportation
- Direct incident response and follow-up, including emergencies, altercations, use-of-force events, and contraband investigations
- Maintain facility readiness, ensuring perimeter security, internal controls, and life-safety systems are tested, functional, and reliable
- Partner with healthcare teams to strengthen suicide prevention, medical observation, and holding-cell safety
- Coordinate with courts, law enforcement, and partner agencies on bookings, transports, and custody transfers
What success looks like
You're successful in this role when:
- Facilities remain secure, compliant, and operationally prepared
- Incidents are handled calmly, decisively, and documented clearly
- Staff feel supported, trained, and confident in their roles
- Supervisors lead with consistency and accountability across all shifts
- Emergency response is proactive-not reactive
What we expect of you
This is a skills-based, hands-on leadership role.
- Experience leading correctional, detention, or public safety operations
- Strong working knowledge of custody standards, security practices, and emergency response
- Proven ability to supervise leaders, coach performance, and hold teams accountable
- Sound judgment under pressure and comfort leading during critical incidents
- Clear, professional communication rooted in fairness, consistency, and respect
Growth, stability & impact
- Executive-level operational leadership with real decision-making authority
- Opportunity to support facility transitions and start-up operations
- Long-term career stability in public service
- Direct impact on safety, staff morale, and community trust
Qualifications
REQUIRES Graduation from an accredited bachelor's degree in criminal justice, public administration, or related field and 8 years of experience in correctional operations, including 5 years of senior security operations management (rank equivalent to Lieutenant or above).
