    Job Summary:

    The Police Officer is assigned to patrol the campus on foot and/or by vehicle, protect lives and property, write clear and concise reports, and enforce penal and Vehicle Code violations. The incumbent will apprehend and arrest violators, appear in court when necessary, provide security for large gatherings, assemblies or other campus activities, and may conduct investigations relative to assigned cases. The incumbent may be required to perform additional duties, which enhance the safety and security of the campus Community. CSUSB places significant importance on Community Partnerships and Community Oriented Problem Solving.

    Responsibilities:

    Under general supervision, the Police Officer primary responsibilities are to enforce laws and traffic violations, protect lives and property, enforce campus policies, patrol campus buildings, apprehend violators, provide general information and assistance to the public, write clear and concise reports, provide security for large gatherings, assemblies or other campus activities and may conduct investigations relative to assigned cases.

    The Incumbent is expected to conduct themselves in a manner which will promote good public relations that support and enhance the goals of the Department. The incumbent shall be courteous in both internal and external relations, conduct themselves in manner that supports teamwork, monitor their Mobile Digital computer (MDC) and radio, acknowledge transmissions when called, keep their status updated and handle calls appropriately and efficiently in accordance with Department Policy, Guidelines and the law. The incumbent will organize their time and focus their attention on the priorities assigned as well as patrol the University and assist other agencies. The incumbent will prepare clear, factual, concise and complete reports and written work. Reports must be in accordance with Department guidelines, policies and procedures. The incumbent will participate in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including firearm proficiency, defensive driving skills, apprehension and arrest techniques, investigative skills, active shooter drills, and general law enforcement skills. The incumbent will conduct investigations at scenes of incidents assigned or incidents observed; determine what, if any, crime has been committed; identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence; locate and interview victims and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects.

    The incumbent is expected to perform their duties in keeping with the community policing philosophy, interacting with the community they serve and addressing problems with their patrol jurisdiction. Incumbent will exchange information with the Department personnel concerning crime prevention efforts and follow-up investigations, review Department activity occurring at the University upon returning from their days off or other leave, maintain open communication within the Department and surrounding agencies regarding problem-solving efforts, community concerns, and enforcement actions. Incumbent will actively participate in shift briefings and station meetings, providing information and status on significant incident/reports.

    The incumbent is expected to prepare and make presentations to the campus community and other entities. Further, is expected to conduct daily foot patrols coupled with community outreach contacts and enhance UPD's relationships with campus community members, students, staff and faculty. The incumbent is also expected to foster a guardian mindset in community contacts, embrace the department's 21 Century Policing Philosophy along with the Police Chief's Philosophy, Department's mission and vision statement and the University's mission statement.

    Additional, the incumbent may carry out other classification-related duties as assigned by their immediate supervisor, the Lieutenant, and/or the Police Chief.

    Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

    Equivalent to a high school diploma and successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program, including a Basic Course Certificate required.

    Required Knowledge, skills, and Abilities

    Applicants must possess a working knowledge of public safety, law enforcement methods, crime prevention, and have completed a P.O.S.T. approved academy or is currently in possession of a P.O.S.T Certificate. Applicants must possess the ability to assess law enforcement or other hazardous situations and determine an appropriate course of action, along with the ability to maintain a cooperative working relationship with the general campus community.

    Compensation and Benefits:

    Initial salary step placement will be Step 14 - $7,888 per month for qualified candidates.

    CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $6,418 - $9,468 per month (Step 1 - Step 22)

    The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.

    The CSU system provides a comprehensive benefit package that includes medical, dental and vision plans, membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), sick and vacation time, and 15 paid holidays a year.     Position Information:

    Work status: Full-time/Non-Exempt/Probationary

    Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (8:00 am - 5:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.

    Conditions of Employment

    Background Check

    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.

    Drivers License Check

    Possession of a valid Driver's License is required. Employees in this position will be enrolled in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Government Employer Pull Notice Program which confirms possession of a valid driver's license and reflects driving record.

    Physical Exam

    Employment is contingent upon candidate passing a pre-employment physical exam with the ability to lift in excess of 50 lbs.

    Mandated Reporter

    The person holding this position is considered a `mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

    Campus Security Authority

    This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) position under the federal Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. CSAs are responsible for reporting allegations of Clery Act Crimes reported to them or that they witness. CSA training is required.
