    Job Summary

    San José State University’s Student Wellness Center (SWC) is dedicated to advancing the holistic health and well-being of its diverse student population. Reporting to the Director of Wellness and Health Promotion, The Health Promotion Specialist, Mental Health plays a key role in designing, implementing, and evaluating campus-wide initiatives that promote mental health, resilience, and help-seeking behaviors.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Plan and lead mental health workshops and programs for students
    • Create and manage health education content and online resources
    • Train and support Peer Health Educators
    • Partner with campus and community groups to promote student well-being
    • Lead campus-wide mental health and prevention initiatives
    • Track program outcomes and make improvements based on data
    • Support events, meetings, and wellness center activities


    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Comprehensive knowledge of health education theory, research, program design, implementation, evaluation, and higher-education standards; familiarity with student development theories.
    • Demonstrated knowledge of the socio-ecological model and how to incorporate universal, selective, and indicated prevention strategies
    • Ability to apply preventive health principles in student counseling and educational settings, with an understanding of the relationship between health and academic success
    • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, social justice, and cultural competence, with strong collaboration skills in multidisciplinary and multicultural environments
    • Ability to organize, promote, and facilitate health education programs, events, and public presentations using appropriate educational materials and communication strategies
    • Ability to mentor student employees (peer educators) with an emphasis on strengths development, while providing regular feedback and connecting student work to academic, internship, fieldwork, and career goals.
    • Effective communication across a variety of venues, including appropriate use of English grammar, professional correspondence, and the ability to draft business reports, presentations, customer service, and public relations
    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, manage sensitive communications, and comply with state, federal, CSU, and SJSU policies and procedures
    • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a detail-oriented environment


    Required Qualifications
    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in an approved program in health education or a related health field
    • Equivalent to one (1) to two (2) years of progressively responsible health education experience or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities


    Preferred Qualifications
    • A Master’s Degree in Public Health or related field
    • Mental Health First Aid certification (or equivalent)
    • At least two (2) years of experience designing, organizing, implementing, and evaluating effective programming
    • At least two (2) years of experience as a student supervisor, lead, and/or mentor
    • Experience planning and delivering health programming about mental health
    • Demonstrated experience developing and delivering health promotion programming for diverse populations


    Compensation

    Classification: Health Educator
    Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,631/month - $7,037/month (Step 10 - Step 13)
    CSU Salary Range: $5,549/month - $8,083/month (Step 1 - Step 20)

    The standard background check includes: criminal check, employment and education verification. Depending on the position, a motor vehicle and/or credit check may be required.
