    The Position

    OPEN & PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATION - SIX MONTHS PROBATIONARY PERIOD

    This current recruitment is for the Fleet Section of Public Works. Candidates who are placed on the eligible list may be considered for other Departments within the City.

    Classifications in this occupational series perform work in the ordering, receipt, storage, maintenance and issuance of automotive parts, tools, supplies, materials and equipment. Under general supervision, positions in this classification perform manual and clerical work and may oversee the work of subordinate staff.

    Essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to, the following:
    Ensures Department services are provided with exceptional customer service and the highest level of ethical standards.

    Receives, unpacks, checks and stores goods, supplies, and equipment. Maintains computerized inventory of materials. Safely moves and properly places materials, such as equipment and tools, in storerooms.

    Issues expendable supplies and materials, checking quantity and quality, in accordance with purchase orders or requisitions. Issues automotive parts and other equipment.

    Separates and stores obsolete parts.

    Performs custodial work to keep the warehouse in a neat and orderly condition.

    Safely operates material handling equipment such as forklifts and pallet jacks to transport, store and retrieve heavy items. Drives light truck to pick up and deliver supplies and equipment.

    Organizes and maintains simple clerical records, such as invoices and receipts, of purchases and other transactions.

    Maintains accurate record of stock used and on-hand.

    Orders supplies, materials, automotive parts and equipment from vendors.

    May provide training to subordinate staff.

    Drives on City business.

    May pump gasoline in cars and trucks and record gasoline pumped.

    Assumes responsibility for ensuring the duties of the position are performed in a safe efficient manner.

    Performs other related duties as assigned or as the situation requires.

    Minimum Requirements

    An equivalent combination of experience and education sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
    Experience
    One year experience in warehousing or purchasing, or one year experience affording knowledge of materials, tools and supplies. Some clerical experience.
    Experience in purchasing automotive parts is highly desirable.

    Education/Training
    High School Diploma or equivalent.

    License(s)/Certification (s)
    Valid Class C California driver's license.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    Knowledge of:

    Applicable material handling procedures, and safe lifting techniques.
    Applicable safety rules, practices and procedures.
    Basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
    Basic math operations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
    Warehousing and purchasing procedures.

    Skill in:
    Identifying various tools, supplies and equipment.

    Ability to:
    Provide exceptional customer service to employees and vendors.
    Communicate effectively in English.
    Coordinate outbound shipments with appropriate shippers.
    Develop necessary skills from on the job training and meet standards of performance for the classification by the end of the probationary period.
    Exercise judgment and discretion in problem situations.
    Foster a teamwork environment.
    Keep simple clerical records of purchases and other transactions.
    Model and practice the highest standards of ethical conduct.
    Move heavy objects and supplies.
    Operate a forklift safely.
    Operate both large and small material handling equipment safely.
    Provide clear work instruction.
    Read, write and comprehend directions in English.
    Utilize a computerized inventory system.

    Other Characteristics
    Willingness to:

    Assume responsibility for maintaining a safe working environment.
    Work overtime as requested or required.

    Promotional Eligibility
    Any City of Glendale employee who meets the minimum qualifications for this position, has completed probation or six months of City employment, and is occupying a permanent full-time classification on file in the Human Resources Department. Hourly City employees may be considered, provided that they furnish proof of continuous employment immediately preceding the final filing date, which would equal a minimum of six months of full-time service or 1040 part-time hours. (Civil Service Rule VIII 4-E).

    Selection Process

    EVALUATION OF APPLICATION: Submitted Application will be reviewed to ensure applicants meet the minimum requirements. Only the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process.
    Candidates must pass each exam component with a minimum score of 70.00% in order to be placed on the eligible list.

    WRITTEN EXAM: (PASS/FAIL) To evaluate the candidate's ability to be successful in this position. Exam will be relevant to the duties of this position. Approximately the 12 highest scoring candidates who achieve a minimum passing score of 70.00% on the written exam will be invited to the further stages of the examination process.

    ORAL INTERVIEW: (Weight of 100%) To evaluate the applicant's experience, education, and personal fitness for the position.
    TIME AND PLACE OF THE EXAMINATION WILL BE ANNOUNCED. Evaluations will be based on the candidate's education and experience relevant to the position. Examinations will assess evaluate the candidate's education, experience, knowledge and skills related to the job. The City of Glendale reserves the right to modify the examination components or their weighting. If changes are necessary, candidates will be informed of the specific examination components and their weight before the examination is administered. The selected candidate will undergo a background check, including Livescan fingerprinting.
