    The City of Burlingame is accepting applications for: Temporary Parks and Tree Worker

    The Position
    Under the direct supervision of a Lead Worker, or higher level staff, the Parks and Tree Worker performs a variety of skilled gardening, landscape and tree maintenance duties associated with the development, repair, and maintenance of public landscaped areas and trees, and performs related work as required.

    Examples of Duties (include but are not limited to the following)
    • Maintain grounds and plantings in City parks, recreation facilities, playground areas, municipal building grounds, and street median islands.
    • Maintain designated landscape effects through mowing, edging, pruning, weeding, fertilizing, cultivating, and planting lawns, shrubs, ground cover, trees, and flower beds.
    • Pick up, clean and remove trash and debris from parks and public property; clean rest rooms and park buildings.
    • Operate various power equipment including mowers, edgers, line trimmers, backpack blowers, sprayers, chain saws, aerators, chippers, brush cutters, sweeper, auger, front-end loader, tractor and its implements, weed whip, stumper, sod cutter, and shop tools.
    • Prepare athletic fields for seasonal sports events; paint park benches, grandstands, and fences; install and repair fences, tennis nets, basketball standards, backstops, benches, paths, and playground equipment;
    • Operate automatic irrigation controllers and assist in the installation of irrigation systems.
    • Assist tree trimmers by lowering cut limbs with ropes and assist in removing trees and stumps.
    • Drive, load and unload vehicles used to transport materials, tools and equipment.
    • Perform traffic control.
    • Work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers.
    • Respond to inquiries from the general public.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Knowledge of: Basic methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in grounds and tree maintenance work; basic construction and repair methods; and safe work practices.

    Ability to: Perform semi-skilled landscape maintenance work; learn to operate the full range of light and heavy equipment used in landscape and tree maintenance work; work off of ladders; set up safe work sites; learn geography of the City and sites of City parks and maintenance areas; work cooperatively and effectively with co-workers and provide general assistance to the public; work weekends and holidays as required; learn multiple safety procedures and practices related to landscape maintenance, tree maintenance and tree removal.

    Skills: Ability to efficiently use hand and power tools listed above required in general park and tree work, and learn to use new equipment as required.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Sufficient education and experience to perform the above duties which is typically obtained through prior experience in gardening, grounds keeping, landscape, construction or tree work and completion of the twelfth grade or equivalent.

    License/Certificate : Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.

    Physical, Mental and Environmental Working Conditions
    Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting trees and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 55 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions, including wet, hot, and cold. The incumbent may use herbicides, which may expose the employee to fumes, dust, and air contaminants, and be exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to use power and noise producing tools and equipment, including the frequent use of chain saws, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions, use proper safety equipment when using noisy and dangerous equipment, hear well enough to follow directions, and see well enough to read instructions.

    The Selection Process
    All applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. The department will invite the most qualified candidates to an oral panel interview. Date and time to be determined.
    • Prior to appointment, candidates are subject to fingerprinting and background reviews.
    • To comply with The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 new employees are required to provide proof of identity and authorization to work in the United States at date of hire. Employee will be required to present an original social security card.


    Benefits

    Healthy Workplaces/Healthy Families Act: California Paid Sick Leave Benefit, as amended effective 1/1/2024. This benefit accrues at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked and is available after 90 days of employment. The maximum use of paid sick leave is 40 hours in a one-year period. There is no cash value associated with benefit.

    Vacation Pay. This benefit is for part-time casual employees who work 30 or more days within a year from the beginning of employment with the City of Burlingame, and accrues at the rate of one hour for every 52 hours worked to a maximum benefit of 16 hours per year. No employee shall be allowed to have an accumulation of more than two years’ worth of vacation accrual to their credit at any one time.

    No other benefits are offered. This position is at will and is not part of the City's Civil Service System. There is no guarantee of hours and employment may end at any time.
