    Transportation & Traffic Division


    SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY

    Start Date: May - June 2026
    End Date: August - September 2026


    Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

    One paid, full-time summer intern position is available with the Transportation and Traffic Division in the Department of Public Works. The position offers an excellent opportunity for a college or graduate student to gain hands-on experience in the field of Civil Engineering. This internship includes both office-based responsibilities and field visits. Selected candidate is required to be on-site at Sunnyvale City Hall.

    Enrichment Opportunities
    • Develop a foundational understanding of civil engineering principles and practices related to transportation planning and traffic engineering
    • Gain hands-on experience and insight into local government work specific to your area of interest and educational background
    Hours: Eight hours a day, five days a week over the summer months. The selected candidate for this position will work under the supervision of a higher-level supervisor on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

    • Collect and analyze traffic data
    • Conduct field observations
    • Perform transportation analyses and studies
    • Assist City staff in preparation and review of signing/striping plans, traffic signal and construction plans, and Temporary Traffic Control Plans

    WORKING CONDITIONS
    Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, and turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine motor coordination when using a computer keyboard. Near vision is required when reading plans, written reports and other documents, and far vision is required when performing field work. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing up to 25 pounds is also required. The job duties may expose the employee to the outdoors, which may include exposure to fumes, dust, allergens, and air contaminants. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • College or graduate student having completed at least one course in Civil Engineering or Transportation Planning
    • Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible
    • Good communication and writing skills
    • Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. AutoCAD and GIS experience are a plus
    • Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good record keeper
    • Interest in Civil Engineering or Transportation Planning and willingness to learn
    • Willingness to travel to various sites within the City utilizing City of Sunnyvale Vehicle

    License/Certificates:
    Possession and continued maintenance of a valid California Class C driver's license and a safe driving record.

    Candidates are required to submit/attach proof of education (i.e., original copy of class schedule or transcripts with the application.
