    ZERO WASTE INTERN
    SOLID WASTE DIVISIONS
    PART-TIME INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY


    Casual Seasonal non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than six (6) consecutive months and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

    A paid intern position is available within the Environmental Services Department. The position is an excellent part-time opportunity for an individual with interest in public service and climate work. Current student enrollment is not required.

    Enrichment Opportunities

    • Learn and work with the City’s garbage and recycling tracking system (Green Halo) and Office 365 suite of applications.

    • Learn concepts of engineering problem solving, data analysis, data management, and database design and development.

    • Learn concepts and strategies related to behavior change and behavior change communication.

    Essential Job Functions

    (May include, but are not limited to, the following):

    • Review available records and collaborate with users, supervisor, and administrators to optimize database features and functionality.

    • Assist in organizing and managing Green Halo’s database for record storage to comply with state CalGreen code.

    • Conduct waste audits for trash and recycling receptacles.

    • Organize waste audit data into an online dashboard.

    • Assist with updating training materials and how-to guides.

    • Help identify ways to clean up the existing database content and presentations.

    • Research effective communication strategies. Support the development of an outreach strategy menu.

    • Support community outreach and engagement through developing publicity, social media posts, flyers, etc. Attend community events to table with City staff and promote environmental programs. Topics can include pollution prevention, zero waste, electrification of transportation or buildings, water conservation, and micromobility.

    • Sort, scan, upload, and organize paper files into the City’s virtual data systems.

    • Work effectively with City staff, consultants, administrators, and the general public; the candidate is expected to conduct themselves in a highly professional manner at all times while representing the City. Assists City staff with other duties as desired, including some administrative tasks as needed.

    • Hours: hours are flexible; a minimum of 16 hours per week is highly desired with a maximum of 25 hours per week. The selected candidate for this position will work under supervision on weekdays between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

    WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking on level, uneven, and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement, and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard and certain tools. The position also requires near and far vision when reading written work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag, carry, and push equipment, tools and supplies up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education:
    High school graduation or GED equivalent AND
    completion of at least one course in Environmental Studies, Computer Information Systems, or a related field.

    • Interest in Environmental Studies and willingness to learn.

    • Positive work attitude, reliable and responsible.

    • Ability to write and communicate concisely and effectively.

    • Proficient computer skills with basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and OneDrive.

    • Advanced computer skills may include (not required) Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, and other data management systems.

    • Good organizational skills, detail-oriented and good data keeper.

    SELECTION PROCESS
