    What We Offer
    The County of Ventura offers an attractive compensation and benefits package. Aside from our base salary range, an employee within this position will also be eligible for the following:

    • Educational Incentive - An educational incentive of 2.5% for completion of an associate degree, 3.5% for completion of a bachelor's degree, OR 5% for completion of a graduate degree that is not required for the position.
    • Bilingual Incentive - Some positions may be eligible for bilingual incentive depending on the applicable memorandum of agreement and the needs of the department. To qualify for this incentive, incumbents in eligible positions must take and pass the applicable bilingual fluency examination.
    • Deferred Compensation - Eligible to participate in the County's 401(k) Shared Savings Plan and/or the Section 457 Plan. This position is eligible for up to a 3% match on your 401(k) contributions.
    • Health Plans - You are afforded a flexible credit allowance for purchasing medical, dental, and/or vision insurance from a group of authorized plans.
    • Flexible Spending Accounts - Pre-tax benefit towards eligible medical, dental, and vision care expenses.
    • Pension Plan - Participation in the County's defined benefit pension plan. If eligible, you may establish reciprocity with other public retirement systems such as CalPERS.
    • Holidays - 13 paid days per year which includes a scheduled floating holiday.
    Under supervision, Sheriff's Cadet I and II performs a variety of duties in a trainee capacity. Incumbents provide support in a variety of areas in the Sheriff's Office.

    Distinguishing Characteristics:
    Sheriff's Cadet I represents the entry level for cadets. Incumbents receive training in assigned duty areas in order to acquire the experience necessary to advance to the journey level.
    Sheriff's Cadet II represents the journey level following completion of a minimum of 800 hours of acceptable performance as a Sheriff's Cadet I.
    Cadet positions consist of part-time employment, which is usually 20 hours per week, and full-time, which is 40 hours per week. Applicants will only be considered for positions ("part-time" or "full-time") and locations they specify on their application.

    PAYROLL TITLES AND APPROXIMATE SALARIES:
    Sheriff's Cadet I: $21.00 - $25.26 per hour
    Sheriff's Cadet II: $21.00 - $27.26 per hour
    VETERAN'S POINTS: The Sheriff's Cadet I is an entry level classification, and Veteran's Points may apply to eligible applicants. Documentation of military service (DD-214) must be submitted prior to close of recruitment in order to receive points.
    AGENCY/DEPARTMENT: Ventura County Sheriff's Office
    Sheriff's Cadet I and II are represented by the Service Employees' International Union (SEIU) and are eligible for overtime compensation.

    Examples Of Duties

    Duties may include but are not limited to the following:
    • Gathers information and writes counter reports at the Sheriff's stations;
    • Provides parking enforcement within the contract cities of the Sheriff's Office;
    • Performs abandoned vehicle enforcement within the Sheriff's jurisdiction;
    • Fingerprints the general public for application processing;
    • Processes and searches inmate mail in the custody operations;
    • Assists in the maintenance and transportation of Sheriff's records including crime reports, citations and statistical data; and
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    Typical Qualifications

    These are entrance requirements to the examination process and assure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
    EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE:
    Sheriff's Cadet I: No experience or training is required; however, applicants must demonstrate possession of requisite abilities.
    Sheriff's Cadet II: Successful completion of a minimum of 800 hours as a Sheriff's Cadet I.
    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Must be at least eighteen (18) years old.
    • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver license.
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Working ability to: understand written and oral instructions; adapt to changes of assignment; maintain good working relationships with co-workers and the public; and perform a variety of law enforcement administrative support activities.

    SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIRE - qualifying: All applicants are required to complete and submit the questionnaire for this examination at the time of filing. The supplemental questionnaire may be used throughout the examination process to assist in determining each applicant's qualifications and acceptability for the position. Failure to complete and submit the questionnaire may result in the application being removed from consideration.
    APPLICATION EVALUATION - qualifying: All applications will be reviewed to determine whether or not the stated requirements are met. Those individuals meeting the stated requirements will be invited to continue to the next step in the screening and selection process.

    WRITTEN EXAMINATION - 100%: An un-proctored, internet-based, job-related written examination will be conducted to evaluate participating applicants' knowledge, skills and abilities in relation to form completion, math, office practices, spelling, comparison and vocabulary. Candidates must earn a score of seventy percent (70%) or higher to qualify for placement on the eligible list.

    VALIDATING PROCTORED WRITTEN EXAM: Offers of employment may be conditional to the candidate until taking and passing an on-site, proctored exam similar to the un-proctored, internet-based exam.

    Candidates successfully completing the examination process may be placed on an eligible list for a period of one (1) year.

    The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill future Regular (including Temporary and Fixed-term), Intermittent, and Extra Help vacancies for these classifications. There are currently two (2) vacancies within the Sheriff's Office - Patrol Services - Ojai and Camarillo, but the list established can be used for future vacancies within the County.

    NOTE: If appointed at the lower level, incumbent may be promoted to the higher level without further examination upon meeting the minimum requirements, demonstrating satisfactory performance, and in accordance with the business needs of the department.

    BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Prior to actual appointment from the eligible list, the successful candidate will be required to pass a thorough background investigation, polygraph test, and psychological examination, conducted by the sheriff's human resources bureau. Background investigation findings may be a basis for removal from the eligible list.
