POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATIONThis is a technically skilled work program lasting up to three (3) years in maintenance and repair of the City’s Facilities. Work includes installing and maintaining plumbing fixtures; changing light bulbs, ballasts, switches and outlets; performing painting, carpentry, masonry, welding, fabrication, general structural and roofing work; and performing preventative maintenance on overhead bay doors, HVAC equipment, pumps and motors. Work is performed under the general direction of the Facilities Supervisor or designated lead worker. Work is assigned orally or through work orders.Working hours may include any shift, weekends and holidays, and applicant must be willing to work mandatory overtime for emergency work
.The Facilities Apprentice will receive training and instruction to learn the essential job functions of a Facilities Maintenance Technician. In addition, the Apprentice will accompany and assist the Facilities Section’s tradespeople in the maintenance and repair of the City’s facilities.
The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. The City of Westminster has a Multilingual Stipend Program to encourage, and reward benefited employees who are conversationally fluent in languages other than English. Benefited employees have the opportunity to test their language proficiency skills and qualify for a bi-weekly stipend that will vary based on the employee’s level of proficiency and usage.

JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks Facilities Maintenance & Repair (Apprentice/Trainee Level) Under direct or general supervision, assists with and progressively learns building maintenance and repair functions to develop journey-level skills
- Assists with installation and maintenance of plumbing systems and fixtures such as sewer lines, shower controls, and faucets
- Performs basic lighting maintenance including changing light bulbs and ballasts
- Assists with painting, drywall, carpentry, ceramic tile, general structural, and minor roofing repairs
- Learns to diagnose and support repairs across multiple trades while following established procedures and safety practices
Preventative Maintenance & Equipment Support Supports preventative maintenance activities while learning proper inspection, maintenance, and repair techniques for municipal facilities and equipment
- Assists with preventative maintenance on overhead bay doors, HVAC equipment, pumps, and motors
- Observes and learns troubleshooting and maintenance techniques from senior staff or supervisors
- Uses hand and power tools in a safe and appropriate manner while developing trade skills
- Operates light trucks and maintenance equipment as assigned and in accordance with training and safety guidelines

POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required :- Graduation from high school or completion of GED

Physical Requirements Work is physical in nature and requires sufficient physical stamina and strength for:
- Occasional sitting to perform daily office tasks and drive to and from work sites; constant standing and walking indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions over all types of terrain
- Frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, and crawling to perform routine equipment and structural maintenance; frequent climbing of ladders up to 45 feet, balancing on ladders and roofs, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform repairs and maintenance
- Occasional light grasp and fine manipulation to perform daily office functions; frequent firm grasp and handling to safely use tools and equipment needed for specific jobs
- Frequent step up/down and actuate mechanism to safely enter/exit and operate vehicles and other equipment
- Constant near acuity and hearing to perform daily tasks, recognize mechanical and electrical issues and communicate with staff and citizens; occasional far acuity to recognize potential mechanical problems and dangers
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds from ground to overhead to place equipment and material; frequent carrying of up to 20 pounds on shoulder or around waist to move material, equipment and tools; occasional carrying of up to 30 pounds and up to 30 feet to move equipment and supplies to work site; occasional pushing/pulling of up to 100 pounds to move and load genie into vehicle and move to desired area within facility
WORKING CONDITIONSWork is frequently performed indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to extreme temperatures. Work is performed at over 39 City facilities year-round in all weather conditions. Various work assignments are performed with exposure to noise levels that may cause a distraction and high electrical voltage, up to 13,000 volts, in a high moisture area. Working environment may include small, confined spaces, working on top of a four (4)-story structure and performing repairs in an emergency situation. Exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals such as refrigerants, natural gas, asbestos, lubricants, all types of paint, drain cleaners, anti-freeze, and other chemicals as necessary
Required Materials and EquipmentEquipment may include but is not limited to ¾-ton trucks and vans, 5-ton bucket trucks, construction materials and supplies, refrigerant recovery equipment, torches, drills, hammers, saws, air compressors, drain cleaning equipment, paint sprayers, welders, cutting torches, metal shears, mechanical lifts, scaffolds, ladders, shovels, various types of air-flow measuring equipment, two-way radios, pagers, laptop and personal computers, telephones, fax machines, as well as other standard office equipment.

The City of Westminster does not participate in the Social Security system. In lieu of Social Security contributions, the city contributes to a 401(a) defined contribution plan on your behalf.
401(a) Contribution Rates:Employee Mandatory Contribution: 11.5% of your base pay. Contributions are pre-tax and fully vested.
Employer Contribution: 12% of your base pay.
