THE DEPARTMENTThe Department of Health and Human Services has been improving the health of the Long Beach community for over a century, and Long Beach is one of only three municipal health jurisdictions in the State of California, as well as one of three City homeless continuums of care in Los Angeles County. The Department recently received public health reaccreditation and works to address matters of public health and safety, including communicable disease, strengthening the public safety net, and equitable access to care. Of the Department’s $201.97 million budget, more than 80% comes from grant funding. The Department is overseen by the Director of Health and Human Services and has more than 55 programs serving the health and wellness of the City. It is organized into seven bureaus-Community Health, Communicable Disease and Emergency Response, Collective Impact, Environmental Health, Homeless Services, the Housing Authority, and Administrative and Financial Services. The Department operates its programs and services as efficiently and effectively as possible, using technology, innovation, and creativity to enhance the quality of services provided to the Long Beach community.
The Health Data & Department Plans team oversees the department’s core data infrastructure, strategic planning initiatives, and community health assessment activities. The team manages administrative and population health data, provides technical guidance and analytics services across the department, and leads development of major assessments and plans, including the Community Health Assessment (CHA) and the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). As part of this work, the team collaborates with public health agencies, community partners, and residents to assess health needs, identify priority areas, and develop actionable strategies to advance population health and health equity. The team also leads the creation of digital tools and data systems that support progress tracking, transparency, and implementation of community health priorities.
THE POSITION The Department of Health and Human Services is seeking
two (2) interns to support the department.
The interns will focus on applied public health informatics, including data management, analytics, digital tool development, and support for major community health improvement planning efforts. Placement will be based on candidate experience, technical skills, and academic background.
This is an unclassified, non-career position. Non-career employees are allowed a maximum of 1600 work hours available over a 12-month period (working no more than 30 hours per week). Non-career employees are not typically eligible for health/dental/vision benefits; however, may be eligible for sick leave benefits. This is an at-will, temporary, part-time position. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES- Support data management and analytics, including collecting, cleaning, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing data;
- Lead the development of a web-based tracking application and related dashboards for the CHIP, by managing design, prototyping, testing, and maintenance tasks;
- Assist with documentation, governance, and reporting by preparing reports, presentations, technical assistance materials, and evaluation documents for internal and community stakeholders;
- Provide meeting and coordination support, such as taking structured notes during meetings or sessions, monitoring follow-up needs, and assisting with logistics and partner communication;
- Provide administrative and outreach support to advance CHA/CHIP-related efforts;
- Performs other related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILE EDUCATION - Current enrollment or acceptance into a Master’s degree program with a focus/emphasis in Data Science, Information Science, Information Systems, Library and Information Science, Data Analytics, or Statistics or related field from an accredited college or university. - Graduated with a Master's degree in the relevant fields mentioned above from an accredited college or university within one (1) year from the time of the application submission date. (Proof required.*)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS - Strong applied experience using R and/or Python for application logic, data processing, workflow automation, and building interactive components (experience with R Shiny is highly desirable);
- Demonstrated experience with advanced app or software development, including:
- Developing or contributing to web-based applications using low-code platforms (e.g., PowerApps) or custom code frameworks.
- Designing application architecture, data structures, backend logic, and user interface flows.
- Integrating applications with APIs, databases, spreadsheets, or other data sources to enable dynamic functionality.
- Creating and refining UI/UX components, improving usability through iterative feedback.
- Conducting structured QA testing, debugging, code review, and versioned improvement cycles.
- Proficiency with version control tools such as Git and GitHub for managing code and collaborative development;
- Ability to translate user needs and functional requirements into technical specifications, workflow diagrams, or working prototypes;
- Experience preparing technical documentation, user guides, or supporting materials for dashboards, digital tools, or applications.
