Current vacancies are with the Long Beach Airport, Police Department, Public Works Department. This classification is also utilized within the Community Development Department, Long Beach Utilities Department and Fire Department.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESUnder general supervision, performs administrative, technical, and professional duties pertaining to public affairs; assists with the preparation of news releases, public information bulletins, and related documents; coordinates and assists with public affairs related special projects, research, events and programs requiring knowledge of community and/or department concerns and issues; responds to emergencies, newsworthy events, and media inquiries; represents City departments at community events, tradeshows, and national and regional committee meetings; produces literature, promotional materials, technical publications, and directories; resolves problems, evaluates procedures and makes recommendations for public affairs issues; prepares reports and makes presentations; may oversee the department's internet, intranet, and social media content; may coordinates the activities, scheduling, recruitment, and training of personnel and volunteers; may serve as a liaison on issues with the community, tenants, businesses, and other City staff; performs related duties as required.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Journalism, Public Administration, Public Relations or a closely related field
(proof required)*. AND Two (2) years of paid, full-time equivalent experience in public affairs/public information.
Opportunities for Substitution of Education or Experience Additional paid, full-time equivalent experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

POSITION SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Positions on the Airport and Police Department require successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation which may include a review of employment history, criminal conviction record, use of intoxicants and/or other controlled substances and any other factors relevant to suitability of employment.
Positions in the Airport Department require the ability to pass the airfield operations written and practical driving examinations within the probationary period.

Willingness to work overtime, weekend and/or holiday hours.
A valid driver’s license, or the ability to arrange necessary and timely transportation for field travel, may be required for some assignments.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Bilingual/Biliterate skills (Spanish, Khmer, or Tagalog) is desired for some positions.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.
In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
