    Description

    The principal function of an employee in this class is to investigate deaths, including violent, suspicious, unexpected and unattended deaths. The principal duties of this class are performed in the field, and an employee may be exposed to health and environmental hazards.

    HIRING SALARY RANGE: $68,140 - $89,252 (Estimated Annual Salary)

    Duties and Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Order of Essential Functions does not indicate importance of functions.)

    Investigates deaths such as violent, suspicious, unexpected and unattended deaths and death scenes to determine cause and/or manner, and, if necessary, to recommend further medical and law-enforcement investigations and actions.Responds to scenes, takes photographs, interviews witnesses, performs a preliminary examination of the body, obtains fingerprints, and takes statements and toxicological specimens at death scenes in order to maintain integrity of evidence.Identifies wounds, including entrances and exits, blunt trauma, sexual assaults, pattern injuries etc.Identifies the deceased in a timely a manner through photographs, fingerprinting, dental records, and medical records, and through coordination with possible family members, the media, and missing person’s networks.Communicates and coordinates investigations with pathologists on difficult cases where complexities exist to include: dental records, lab tests, evidence, photographs, x-rays, reports and others as indicated.Disposes of bodies and human remains, including certifying death certificates, giving authorization for cremations, and arranging for burial of unclaimed and unknown remains.Contacts other agencies such as SLED, works with the AFIS, toxicology, forensic pathologists and/or Medical Examiners, ICE and other agencies in gathering information pertaining to a victim.Develops reports of crimes, accidents, evidence, statements and the pathologist’s findings and provides information to proper law enforcement personnel.

    May be designated to report to work during hazardous weather or emergency conditions.

    Performs other duties or assumes other responsibilities as apparent or assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Associate Degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or Health Care. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. 1-2 years or more of experience in medicine or law enforcement preferably ABMDI Certified; or Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the work; and Possession of a valid State Driver’s License indicating a clean DMV record.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Clarity of speech and hearing or other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively with medical and law-enforcement personnel, funeral directors, and the general public.Vision or other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee operate photographic equipment to investigate, identify, preserve, and maintain evidence.Manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate computers and other general office equipment.Personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to operate a vehicle, lift heavy objects, and to easily move about in a way that will not disturb evidence.Able to stand for extended amounts of time in different conditions.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    Employee may be exposed to health and environmental hazards. Position requires travel within and outside of the County which imposes common travel hazards.Manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, to enable the employee to operate tools

    continuously, to lift and carry a wide variety of supplies, equipment and bodies.

    Standard work hours must be flexible, will include days, evenings, overnights and weekends. May be greater than 40 hours per week, and may be called to report to duty at any time.Work is performed inside and outside. Exposure to cold, heat and elements of weather and nature may be encountered.

    There is no residency requirement for this position.
