    Under limited supervision of a Professional Engineer, this position independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard and/or complex engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.

    Job Description:

    Duties, Functions and Responsibilities:

    Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.
    • Reviews plans and permits under the supervision of a professional engineer and development proposals for impacts, and performing preliminary and final designs and/or prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
    • Provides a variety information to customers by contacts of personnel to include inter and intra departmental administrative, engineering and construction personnel, other government agencies, contractors, consultants and the public to exchange information, coordinate work, answer questions and respond to complaints.
    • Is responsible for progressively complex projects by preparing cost estimated and engineering and feasibility reports and studies, projects, and assigned programs
    • Inspects and monitors projects for legal compliance by reviewing work completed by contractors and monitoring compliance to specifications.
    • Prepares contract documents, technical specifications and plans. Prepares and monitors project and program schedules and budgets. Prepares progress and final reports and estimates.
    • Manages and coordinates special projects; supervises and/or leads a design team in the preparation of preliminary and long-range plans; schedules, estimates, budgets, and details final construction plans, specifications, special conditions and agreements; oversees project progress from design through construction.
    • Assists and/or writes specifications by performing preliminary and/or final designs; prepares design criteria for assigned projects in appropriate discipline.
    • Performs equipment evaluations to ensure valid results.
    • Conducts field investigations to ensure compliance of specifications, reviews work for accuracy, and recommends approval of contract changes.

    May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.
    • Knowledge of diversified, fundamental scientific and civil engineering concepts, phenomena, and relationships.
    • Knowledge of mathematical techniques such as trigonometry, calculus, and coordinate geometry.
    • Knowledge of modern methods, materials, and techniques of assigned discipline.
    • Knowledge of one or more of the following disciplines: Civil, Environmental, Structural, Architectural, Mechanical and/or Electrical engineering terminology and techniques.
    • Knowledge of City purchasing and contract policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of applicability of established engineering principles and methods.
    • Knowledge of various phases of the plans review and inspections processes.
    • Knowledge of various computer software programs.
    • Knowledge of preparation of cost estimates and engineering and feasibility reports.
    • Skill in oral and written technical and/or general communication.
    • Ability to perform more complex engineering computations, calculus, geometry, and trigonometry, rapidly and accurately.
    • Ability to interpret and update quarter-section maps.
    • Ability to Interpret and make decisions in conformance within established policies and practices.
    • Ability to communicate and provide direction to peers and assigned personnel.


    Minimum Qualifications:
    • Graduation with a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in a field related to engineering, plus four (4) years of experience in a field related to the job, one (1) year in a lead capacity.
    • Experience may substitute for education up to four (4) years.


    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Detailed hands on understanding and/or experience with Maximo.
    • Experience work at a Power Plant.
    • Experience managing and writing municipal contracts.
    • Experience in writing Scopes of Work.
    • Experience in tracking and monitoring spend.
    • Experience in developing power plant operations reports and GADS reporting.
    • Experience in MS Word and PowerPoint.
    • Ability to travel to various locations for regular work.


    Notes to Candidate:

    This position will assist in analyzing technical data and running reports for various power plant equipment. Under the supervision of the Plant Manager and under close direction of the Plant Engineer this position will investigate issues and problems within the power plant. This position will be the have a small set of projects to maintain and keep contractors within compliance. With direction this position will also develop scopes of work and see this work through completion. This position will assist in the day to day tracking of work and will assist in Maximo and Purchase Orders and Purchase requests.

    Other Duties:
    • Assist in incidents and investigations regarding power plant equipment issues and failures.
    • Assist in monitoring power plant contracts
    • Assist in power plant contracts, developing contracts, tracking spend.
    • Work with contractors and develop and tracking small projects to completion.
    • Write Scopes of Work
    • Develop presentations for projects


    This position is essential to the City of Austin and may require weekends and overnight hours.

    Work Location: Sand Hill Energy Center, 1101 Fallwell Ln., Del Valle, TX 78617

    Pay Range: Based experience and current City of Austin approved pay rates/ranges.

    Days/Hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

    This has been designated as an Essential Employee position. In the event of a City-designated emergency, Essential Employees provide services that impact the public health, safety, utility services, and welfare of members of the Austin community and other employees and ensure the continuity of essential operations. In such an emergency, Essential Employees may be called back in, may be required to modify their schedule, may be assigned to a City-designated work site, or may be retained on site to assist with operations and recovery.

    City Government
