DescriptionTHE POSITIONUnder general direction, the Senior Physical Therapist evaluates referred patients and designs, coordinates, and administers comprehensive physical therapy programs to support rehabilitation goals. This role provides leadership through the training, and mentoring of staff physical therapists, physical therapy assistants, aides, volunteers, and students, ensuring high standards of patient care and professional practice.
IDEAL CANDIDATEThe ideal candidate is a clinically skilled and experienced physical therapist with strong leadership and mentoring abilities. They demonstrate sound clinical judgment, a commitment to high-quality patient care, and the ability to guide and develop team members.
EDUCATIONAL/BILINGUAL INCENTIVE: Incumbents may be eligible for educational incentive of 2.5%, 3.5%, or 5% based on completion of an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree that is not required for the classification. Incumbents may also be eligible for bilingual incentive depending upon operational need and certification of skill.
CERTIFICATION PAY: Incumbents in the Physical Therapist and Sr. Physical therapist classification may be eligible for certification pay at a rate of $0.80 per hour up to a maximum of three (3) certifications.

Examples Of DutiesDuties may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Conducts evaluations and ongoing assessments to determine patients’ physical and functional status;
- Establishes realistic, precaution-based functional goals based on physician referral and clinical evaluation;
- Performs appropriate physical therapy tests within scope of practice;
- Plans and implements therapeutic exercise programs and interventions, modifying as needed;
- Applies and adjusts adaptive equipment and splints;
- Documents patient status, treatment plans, and progress in accordance with standards;
- Participates in quality improvement activities;
- Attends staff meetings, clinics, and patient rounds as assigned;
- Serves as a clinical resource and mentor, providing advanced guidance and support to therapy staff;
- Reviews and provides oversight of evaluations, treatment plans, and documentation to ensure quality and compliance;
- Consults with physicians and interdisciplinary team members on complex or high-risk cases;
- Assumes lead responsibilities, including staff oversight and coordination of services, in the absence of a supervisor; and
- Performs other related duties as required.
Typical QualificationsThese are the entrance requirements to the exam process and ensure neither continuance in the process nor placement on an eligible list.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, and EXPERIENCE- A Bachelor‘s degree from an accredited school of physical therapy, or proof of equivalency; and two (2) years of physical therapy experience
OR- Successful completion of an internship program with the hiring department or an equivalent training program; and one (1) year of experience as a Physical Therapist
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Possession of a current valid Physical Therapist License issued by the State of California; or must be eligible to apply for and obtain a valid California Physical Therapist License within the probationary period. Once obtained, a current valid California Physical Therapist License is a condition of continued employment
- Possess a current, valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification by first day of employment and maintain it thereafter
- Physical ability to lift and carry fifty (50) pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
- Live scan fingerprinting clearance will be required prior to appointment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIESComprehensive knowledge of:the principles of human anatomy and physiology; administering various types of physical therapy treatment utilizing manual therapy techniques, exercise, and equipment; and departmental processes and procedures.
Working ability to:establish effective working relationships with patients, physicians, and co-workers; plan and supervise the work of others; and communicate effectively orally and in written form.
