    OVERVIEW

This internship will be pivotal in supporting the department’s efforts to improve and formalize key operational processes, ultimately contributing to the County's prestigious Public Works accreditation status. The two available internship positions offer students a real-world public sector operational project, where they will gain hands-on experience in process documentation, operational improvements, and strategic planning-all while supporting a mission of operational excellence and long-term community impact.

As part of the 2026 American Public Works Association (APWA) reaccreditation process, interns will have the unique chance to assist in transitioning the Facilities Maintenance Department from a reactive to a proactive, preventative maintenance program. You’ll contribute to a legacy of continuous improvement, helping to build structured Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that will guide operations for years to come. With a blend of professional development and exposure to government service delivery, this is an outstanding opportunity to refine leadership and business management skills while contributing to the effective and efficient management of public facilities that serve the Kitsap County community.
Upon completion of this internship, you will receive a $500 stipend.

As an intern with Kitsap County Public Works - Capital Facilities Division, you will:
    • Conduct Document Research and Review: Analyze current maintenance procedures, APWA accreditation standards, existing SOPs, and preventative maintenance guidelines to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
    • Conduct Staff Interviews & Operational Discovery: Engage with maintenance technicians, custodial staff, and supervisors to gather institutional knowledge and better understand current operational workflows.
    • Develop SOPs & Operational Protocols: Assist in drafting and refining SOPs for daily operations, preventative maintenance planning, emergency response protocols, vendor coordination, and work order management procedures.
    • Support CMMS Integration: Contribute to the implementation of the department’s new Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS), helping document workflows and creating user guides for staff.
    • Assist in Staff Training & Communication Support: Develop training materials, visual guides, and procedure summaries to help staff understand and implement the new processes being documented.

    This internship will:
    • Provide hands-on experience in developing and documenting operational processes within a public sector organization.
    • Enhance your skills in business operations, leadership, and management while working with experienced professionals to improve departmental efficiency.
    • Expose you to a real-world public sector project, contributing to Kitsap County’s APWA reaccreditation and impacting local government operations.

    What you bring:
    • Educational Background:
      • Currently enrolled as a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior in a program in business, organizational leadership, project management, or related field OR
      • Post graduate eligibility:
        • Graduated within the last 6 months from a college or university with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related field OR
        • Graduated and continued to a related higher education program.
    • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage diverse staff and stakeholders. Comfort with research, interviewing, and presenting findings in clear, actionable formats.
    • Organizational Abilities: Detail-oriented approach with capability to manage multiple tasks and maintain organized systems
