motivated, experienced, and team-oriented professional to join our
Community Development Department’s Planning Division as our next
Senior Planner.
In this key role, you will work independently under the supervision of the Principal Planner - helping to shape the future growth and character of our community. The Senior Planner is expected to work effectively with City staff, applicants, outside agencies and organizations, and the general public to complete assignments, which could be associated with either long-range or current planning.
Key Responsibilities - Coordinate the processing of complex development applications and City-initiated projects, both long-range and current
- Provide assistance and information to the general public through regular shifts at the Permit Center
- Attend weekly Staff Review Board meetings to gather comments from other City departments on development applications
- Participate in activities supporting both long-range and current planning initiatives
- Coordinate and participate in preparing, evaluating, and analyzing environmental documents to ensure accuracy and provide appropriate feedback
- Plan, coordinate, and review work performed by consultants, including the preparation of required agreements
- Prepare and present staff reports to decision-making and/or advisory bodies, including the Design Review Subcommittee, the Land Use and Development Committee, the Planning Commission, and the City Council
- Represent the City in meetings with members of other public and private organizations, community groups, and the general public
- Stay current on principles, and best practices, of local land use planning

Qualifications Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban or regional planning, architecture, or a related field.
- Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in urban or regional planning.
Licenses and Certifications: - Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record must be maintained throughout employment.

The examination process will consist of: - Application Review - Submitted applications will be assessed based on job-related qualifications, including desirable qualifications and the specific needs of the hiring department. Candidates may be screened to identify those who are best qualified to proceed in the examination process.
- Panel Board Interview - Those candidates identified as best qualified will be invited to a panel board interview, tentatively scheduled for the week of June 1, 2026.
Eligible List : All applicants that pass the examination process will be placed on the eligible list which is good for at least 6 months and may be extended up to an additional 18 months. This eligible list will be used by the City of Brentwood to fill all current and future openings in this classification as long as the list is active.
