    Position Description

    The Tacoma Fire Department is seeking a skilled and experienced Fire & Marine Equipment Shop Supervisor to oversee and lead the Fire Department vehicle and apparatus maintenance facility. Under the direction of the assigned Fire Chief, you will play a crucial role in community safety by ensuring all equipment is maintained to the highest operational and safety standards. The classification of Fire & Marine Equipment Shop Supervisor is classified and represented by Local 160. In this role, you will be expected to provide supervisory guidance and lead technical work in the maintenance and repair of the City’s fire and marine equipment including fire trucks, fire engines, fire boats, staff vehicles and related firefighting equipment. This additionally includes coordinating service schedules, record keeping, and overseeing maintaining parts inventory.

    Qualifications

    An equivalent combination to:
    Graduation from high school and five years of experience in the repair and maintenance of fire, marine or heavy equipment, and supervisory experience.

    Licenses, Certifications, and other Requirements:
    Possession of a valid Washington Driver’s License with Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License certification at the time of appointment and maintenance thereafter.

    • Methods, tools, and equipment used in fire and marine equipment repair and maintenance.
    • Diagnosis and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and engine systems.
    • Planning, assigning, and supervising repair and maintenance work.
    • Record-keeping, report preparation, and inventory management.
    • Principles and practices of supervision, training, and effective teamwork.
    • Oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills using tact and professionalism.
    • Safety practices, hazard regulations, and basic first aid procedures.
    • Ability to analyze situations, make effective decisions, and operate motor vehicles.

    Other Employment Information

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
