    Police/Fire & EMS Dispatcher

    Department: Police/Safety

    Status: Full-time, Classified, Non-Exempt

    Reports To: Police/Fire & EMS Lead Dispatcher

    Position Overview

    Under general supervision, you will serve as the vital communication link between the public and the City's emergency responders. This role performs high-stakes dispatching and communication support for police, fire, and emergency medical services to ensure public safety and rapid incident response. Starting hourly pay rate $27.27 + 10% Pension Pick-Up. + competitive benefits package including health, dental, optical and life insurance, and generous paid time off.

    Essential Functions

    • Emergency Call Management: Receive high volumes of emergency and non-emergency calls; question callers to determine location and nature of the emergency to prioritize response requirements.
    • Tactical Dispatching: Use public safety radio and Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) systems to coordinate police, fire, EMS, and public works responders.
    • Unit Safety & Monitoring: Monitor police GPS and radio frequencies (including school security and civil defense) to maintain watch for unit safety and develop situational awareness.
    • Emergency Instructions: Provide life-saving emergency medical instructions to callers while initiating public safety alerting systems.
    • Data Systems Operations: Enter and retrieve critical data from teletype and computerized networks (LEADS) regarding warrants, subpoenas, and stolen property.
    • Administrative Support: Maintain personnel rosters, calibrate specialized equipment, and greet walk-in members of the public to provide information or referrals.

    Qualifications & Requirements

    • Age/Education: Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
    • Background Check: Satisfactory background check is required for all candidates.
    • Required Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and concisely under extreme stress.
      • Active listening skills to handle confrontational or challenging individuals effectively.
      • Knowledge of FCC rules and public safety radio procedures.
    • Licensure & Certification:
      • LEADS Certification: Must possess or obtain within six (6) months of hire.
      • EMD Certification: Must possess or obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch certification within six (6) months.
      • Notary: Certification is preferred.

    Physical & Environmental Demands

    • Environment: Primarily an office-based dispatch center; must be able to work various shifts including evenings and weekends.
    • Noise & Hazards: Moderate noise levels that can become very loud due to sirens; potential exposure to human blood or office chemical compounds.
    • Physical Ability: Frequent sitting, standing, and use of a keyboard and ACD console; must have specific close and distance vision abilities.
