    THE CITY
The City of Menifee is a vibrant and rapidly growing municipality located in southwestern Riverside County, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for its residents through innovative public service and strategic development. Under the leadership of the City Manager, Menifee operates through a dynamic organizational structure composed of fifteen (15) departments - Building & Safety, City Attorney, City Clerk, City Manager, Code Enforcement, Community Development, Community Services, Economic Development, Engineering, Finance, Fire Department, Human Resources, Information Technology, Police, and Public Works, each committed to supporting the city’s mission of responsive governance, sustainable growth, and public safety. With a strong emphasis on infrastructure development, community engagement, and innovation, the City of Menifee continues to enhance the quality of life for its diverse and dynamic population.

    THE DEPARTMENT
The Public Works Department serves as a cornerstone of the City of Menifee’s infrastructure, delivering high-quality services that enhance safety, mobility, and overall quality of life for residents, businesses, and visitors. The department oversees the maintenance of public rights-of-way, including streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, streetlights, drainage systems, and the city’s vehicle and equipment fleet. Its responsibilities extend to vital community programs such as the Street Sweeping Program, which supports environmental compliance; the Local Improvement District Program, which addresses the paving and upkeep of residential dirt roads; and the Capital Improvement Program, which manages the city’s long-term infrastructure investments. Public Works also leads community engagement efforts through initiatives like Street Scene, Menifee’s traffic management forum, and the Adopt-a-Street Program, which empowers residents to help keep city streets clean. In addition, the department collaborates with regional partners on storm drain maintenance, supports emergency response efforts, and provides traffic engineering services to ensure safe and efficient travel throughout the city.

    THE OPPORTUNITY
The Street Maintenance Worker I will be responsible for supporting the construction, repair, and upkeep of the City’s streets and essential public infrastructure, playing a hands-on role in keeping Menifee safe, clean, and accessible. This position includes repairing sidewalks, and storm drains, removing graffiti, installing traffic signs, operating heavy equipment, and assisting with asphalt, concrete, and drainage projects. Depending on level, the position provides a pathway for growth: entry-level workers gain foundational experience under close supervision, while journey-level workers take on more complex assignments, exercise greater independence, and may guide specialty crews.

Street Maintenance Worker I : This is the entry level classification in the Street Maintenance Worker series. Incumbents perform the less skilled and more routine street maintenance, construction, and repair work. Incumbents at this level work under close supervision as they gain experience and demonstrate ability to perform a range of duties with minimal supervision. Removal of graffiti is done on a wide variety of surfaces and the treatment of surfaces with graffiti retardant materials. This class is distinguished from the Street Maintenance Worker II in that the latter performs work which requires a higher level of experience.

    Early Inhabitants

The area was originally inhabited by the Luiseno and Pechanga Indian tribes, and in the 1700s, the area fell under the rule of the Spanish empire. The area was eventually annexed into the United States from Mexico in 1850 under California's statehood.

Farming activity beginning in the mid-1800s was concentrated in the Menifee area. Mining activity began in the early 1880s with the discovery of a significant quartz lode by miner Luther Menifee Wilson. Menifee derived its name from that mining operation.

    Early Development

Early development of the City of Menifee began with Sun City in the early 1960s as the concept of an active retirement community that was envisioned by Del Webb, a major building contractor from Phoenix, Arizona. Sun City is centrally located within the City of Menifee with a mix of residential and commercial activity.

The Menifee area began to grow further in 1989 with the master-planned community of Menifee Lakes and continues to be one of the fastest growing communities in California. Quail Valley is a semi-rural residential community in the northwestern section of the city, and Romoland is a residential and commercial community located in the northeastern section of the city.
