Overview
The CDL Driver Apprentice is responsible for the safe collection of residential refuse, recycling, brush, debris, and sludge from wastewater plants. This position will train in Refuse, Disposal, Composting, AND Recycling equipment. This will be a training position for those that have gone through the CDL Driver Trainee to obtain their Class A or Class B CDL. Once progressed to this position, they will train for a period of up to one year before progressing to either a Sanitation I or II depending on the years of experience.
Responsibilities
• Performs routine maintenance of assigned equipment, such as greasing joints, brushings, checking/addition motor oil, Hydraulic fluid, monitor tire pressure
• Operates a heated pressure washer, airless sprayer, or chemical cleaners
• Reads maps, uses navigation tools problem solving skills
• Works on feet and provides physical labor in areas of the transfer station, landfill, solid waste yards and other locations in the city or surrounding areas
• Operates two or more types of sanitation equipment, including side-automated loader (right steer vehicle), semi-automated rear loader, debris and brush collection vehicles including truck mounted rear-steer, self-loader, grapple truck and roll-off truck
• Trains and operates the following: construction equipment, wheeled loader 544k equivalent and larger, track dozer D6 equivalent and larger, excavator, motor grader, water truck 18-yard dump trailer and forklift
• Responds during time of natural disaster such as hurricane clean up and emergency dispatch from the police department to clear streets and highways of fallen trees and debris
• Requires professional communication with the public to inform them of Solid Waste services
• Attends public events and community outreach events
• Operates tablet, takes photos, document labor hours and fills in reports
Position Type and Typical Hours of Work
• Non - Exempt - Full-Time - 40 hours a week
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays is a schedule requirement
• In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services

Minimum Qualifications
• High School Diploma/GED
• No prior experience required
Certifications, Licenses or other requirements
Required
• A valid driver's license is required; successful out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain a valid Texas driver's license within 90 days of hire
• Class A or Class B CDL

Basis of Rating
A recruitment consultant will evaluate all applications against the posted qualifications. The city may also conduct additional skill assessment tests, in addition to the panel interview
