    Firefighter

    The Gila River Indian Community is seeking a firefighter for the Gila River Fire Department in Chandler, AZ. The position is full-time with a salary of $18.02 per hour for a 56-hour work week. The job is open until filled.

    The firefighter will perform emergency response work in fire fighting, emergency rescue, and hazardous material response to protect the lives and properties of the members of the Gila River Indian Community. The firefighter is responsible for the safe delivery of equipment and personnel in emergency response situations, including fire fighting,emergency rescue, and hazardous material response. Also performs various maintenance and custodial duties at the assigned fire station.

    Essential functions include participating in organizational, departmental, and workgroup goals and objectives; exhibiting a service orientation toward customers; responding to incidents requiring fire fighting, emergency rescue, or hazardous material response; making forced entries into structures; searching structures; deploying attack and coverage hose lines; extinguishing fires; rescuing trapped and/or injured persons; assisting fire victims; ventilating structures; securing fire scenes; performing salvage and overhaul operations; responding to calls for emergency medical services; providing services during emergency and/or rescue operations in accordance with protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support; evaluating injuries and mental status; dressing wounds; immobilizing fractures; taking vital signs; obtaining medical history; treating patients at scene and/or stabilizing and preparing patients for transport to medical facility; communicating information to hospital; triaging multiple patients; assuring safety of EMS scenes; responding to car accidents; extricating patients manually or mechanically; inspecting assigned emergency response apparatus and equipment daily to ensure efficient operating condition and readiness; cleaning and maintaining equipment after completion of emergency response operations; attending and participating in training sessions and ongoing physical training activities; preparing and maintaining activity records; cleaning and performing minor maintenance on department buildings; maintaining fire station grounds; inspecting fire hydrant and calculating required fire flow data and flow testing data; and performing other related duties as assigned.

    Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of modern fire fighting; knowledge in proper use and maintenance of fire apparatus, equipment, tools, devices, and facilities; knowledge of advanced first aid, CPR, and other medical assistance techniques; ability to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies, rules, instructions, and written material in the field of fire fighting; ability to operate a variety of fire fighting equipment; ability to demonstrate physical aptitude as required; ability to analyze fire and emergency situations and adopt effective courses of action; ability to retain presence of mind in emergency situations; ability to operate and maintain voice radio equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community members, Community officials, and the general public; and ability to perform and maintain all physical conditioning requirements of the position and agree to maintain a drug-free workplace.

    Required education and experience include a high school diploma or GED and at least 18 years of age. Additional requirements include certification as a Firefighter I & II (AZ State, Pro-Board or IFSAC) or proof of successful completion of a program that is compliant with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications; certification as a Firefighter I & II (AZ State, Pro-Board or IFSAC) or proof of successful completion of a program that is compliant with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications; certification as a Firefighter I & II (AZ State, Pro-Board or IFSAC) or proof of successful completion of a program that is compliant with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications; required to pass a background check and fingerprint clearance as a condition of employment and must continue to maintain throughout duration of employment; required to pass a written and physical agility test or currently hold a Candidate Physical Agility Test (CPAT) card with a completion date within the past 6 months; required to obtain a Tribal Operator's permit; valid state driver's license with a current proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit; and proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application.
