    Crime Analyst

    The City of Roanoke is seeking a Crime Analyst to research, analyze, and prepare crime data, statistics, and reports. Job responsibilities include but are not limited to locating, compiling, and analyzing information, statistics, and other crime data from computer databasesto identify patterns of crime, assist with identifying or targeting suspects, and patrolling of problem areas. The successful applicant will collect and analyze statistical information using surveys and recognized quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques and review, analyze, and disseminate crime reports. They will also create and maintain computer databases, spreadsheets, and graphical displays using appropriate software. Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university with major in statistics, business administration, public administration, geography, criminal justice or related field; one to three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of SQL and GIS preferred. Must be in possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.     Examples of Duties

    Researches, analyzes, and prepares crime data, statistics, and reports. Essential duties and responsibilities may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

    • Locates, compiles, and analyzes information, statistics, and other crime and traffic data from computer databases to identify patterns of crime, assist with identifying or targeting suspects, and patrolling of problem areas.
    • Collects and analyzes statistical information using surveys and recognized quantitative and qualitative analytical techniques.
    • Reviews, analyzes, and disseminates crime and traffic reports.
    • Prepares and disseminates reports on crime and traffic data and trends for use by department staff and other law enforcement agencies.
    • Creates and maintains computer databases, spreadsheets, and graphical displays using appropriate software.
    • Prepares graphical reports and displays on crime and traffic data and information using computer applications, graphs, charts, diagrams, and maps.
    • Works with public information officer to develop information for the media as necessary.
    • Collects and compiles criminal intelligence information; and the entry of data, reports or records of criminal intelligence information.
    • Prepares reports for Freedom of Information Act requests.
    • Attends and presents oral and written briefings on the results of criminal incidents or intelligence analysis during staff briefings.
    • Prepares and conducts citizen and other surveys.
    • Prepares composites of suspects involved in criminal activity, as requested by investigators

Ability to communicate effectively with management, public groups or employees of organization. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand and sit. The employee is occasionally required to walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include ability to adjust focus. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
