    Finance provides leadership and management, department-wide fiscal policy direction, financial systems management, and coordination of core financial accounting, payroll, and financial reporting services for the County.

    ABOUT THE JOB:
    The Senior Accounting Technician is responsible for supporting the financial operations of Deschutes County. The Accounting team in Finance consists of three Senior Accounting Technicians, two Accountants, one Payroll Coordinator, and one Payroll Supervisor under the direction of the Controller, Procurement Manager, and CFO.

    The Senior Accounting Technician should have impeccable dependability and be receptive to collaborative feedback from coworkers. An ideal candidate is process-oriented with a strong customer service and team-driven attitude. The ability to communicate clearly about challenges, competing deadlines, and priorities is essential. We seek candidates who are highly adaptable to changing priorities and interruptions to workflow. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented and adept at multitasking. Deschutes County has a small staff, and each of us is often called upon to do a wide range of job duties. Because of this, flexibility and excellent communication skills are crucial to the position.

    Typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm.

    This position is located in Deschutes County and may be eligible for hybrid/in-office remote work as allowed by policy and approved by the supervisor. The accounting team currently works remotely ONLY on Mondays.

    Key Responsibilities:
    • Help ensure County financial operations run smoothly by reviewing cash receipts, invoices, requisitions, purchase orders, contracts, vendor records, positive pay exceptions, and employee reimbursements for proper documentation, coding, approvals, and compliance with County procedures.
    • Assist with preparation of RFPs, bid documents, contracts, and other procurement-related tasks in support of the Procurement Manager.
    • Assist payroll supervisor with processing employee timesheets, processing payroll, employee training, and payroll reporting.
    • Conducts complex special research and analysis projects; summarizes data and generates reports.
    What You Will Bring:

    Knowledge of or experience with:
    • Customer service standards and protocols.
    • Accounting and bookkeeping principles and methods, including experience accounting for transactions and transfers across multiple funds, departments, programs, or lines of business.
    • Principles of record keeping and records management.
    Skill in:
    • Performing a variety of complex accounting functions to support County operations, depending on area of assignment.
    • Maintaining accurate electronic records including identifying and reconciling errors.
    • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with co-workers, other County employees, and representatives from other regional and federal agencies.
    • Effective verbal and written communication.

    Compensation

    $5,186.61 to $6,950.54 per month for a 172.67-hour work month. Salary normally starts at the first step. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This position is available immediately.

    This position may also be eligible for a Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) on June 22, 2026, pending budget adoption by the Board of County Commissioners.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • Associate’s degree in Accounting or related field;
    • AND four (4) years of financial accounting experience;
    • OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the job.
    Preferred Qualifications :
    • Finance accounting experience with municipality.


    Necessary Special Requirements

    The employment offer will be contingent upon pre-employment screening for criminal history and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). These screenings must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.

    When Are you Eligible:
    If you are hired on the first business day of the month, your benefits will start on the first of that month (immediate benefits, either that day or back to the first of the month if the first is on a Saturday or Sunday). If you are hired after the first business day of the month, your benefits will start on the first day of the following month.
