    Firefighter Position

    Now accepting applications to fill two, full-time firefighter positions with qualified candidates looking to join a team that is committed to serving the community with pride while investing in its members' success.

    Firefighters protect life and property by responding to calls for emergency services, performing rescue and fire suppression activities, delivering emergency medical services; and containing or mitigating hazardous materials. Position also includes substantial time spent in training and performing tasks related to the maintenance of department buildings, grounds, apparatus and equipment. This is a full-time, non-exempt position currently working rotating 24-hour shifts, averaging 56-hours per week.

    Anticipated starting pay is $83,807 to $93,825 per year. Full 2026 pay range is $83,807 to $110,394 per year.

    Anticipated Hiring Timeline Initial Review of Applications - July 2 -7 In-Basket Exercise Emailed Out - July 8 In-Basket Exercise Due Back - July 15 Panel Interviews - July 22 & 23 Chief's Interviews - July 29 Pre-Employment Screenings* - August to mid-Sept. City Council Approval to Hire - Sept. 21 Anticipated Start Date - early October

    *Pre-Employment screenings include a comprehensive background check, pre-employment medical, fitness and psychological evaluations and a pre-employment drug test.

    Essential Functions and Responsibilities
    • Respond to emergency fire, rescue, medical, hazardous material, or other incidents in accordance with department, city and national standards.
    • Perform firefighting activities, including establishing water supply, laying and pulling hose, pumping, retrieving and/or setting up equipment, forcible entry, search and rescue, ventilation and other fire-scene responsibilities.
    • Render emergency medical care and treatment in accordance with departmental standards.
    • Performs hazard identification and mitigation activities.
    • Safely and effectively operate department apparatus and equipment in emergent and non-emergent responses.
    • Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of department apparatus, equipment, grounds, and buildings.
    • Assist with community outreach, education and risk reduction efforts.
    • Participate in training and continuing education to maintain or upgrade knowledge as required by department policy or state mandates.
    • Prepare and maintain records and reports in compliance with departmental standards and procedures.
    • Represent the City of Savage to the public in a positive and professional manner.
    • Work effectively and collaboratively with other first responders in the delivery of emergency services within the City of Savage and during mutual aid response to neighboring communities.
    • Perform other related work as apparent or assigned.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
    • The equivalent of at least one year of full-time experience as a firefighter in a combination or full-time fire department.
    • Certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) and licensed by the Minnesota Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS) as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or higher.
    • Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a firefighter, or the ability to obtain licensing within one year of hire (Minnesota Statute §299N).
    • Valid driver's license, or the ability to obtain one by date of hire.
    • Must pass a comprehensive pre-employment physical exam, drug screen, and psychological evaluation.
    • Must meet minimum physical fitness program standards at time of hire, and maintain throughout employment, as demonstrated by successful completion of an annual physical agility/endurance test.
    • Must be able to work in hazardous conditions wearing at least 65 pounds of firefighting gear including a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), while performing firefighting duties.
    Desirable Qualifications
    • Paramedic certification.
    • Blue Card Command certification (online and simulation lab).
    • Post-secondary education in Fire Science or closely related field.
    • Certified Minnesota Fire Apparatus Operator (FAO).
    • IFSAC and/or ProBoard certified as a Fire Officer I and II.
    • American Heart Association Basic Life Support Instructor.
    • National Child Passenger Safety Certification.
    • Experience with fire and building codes.
    • Fluency in a second language in addition to English.
    Supplemental Information
    • Normal shift = 24-hour shifts
    • Work indoors and outdoors, often in adverse weather conditions.
    • Stress level varies from low to very high
