Education and Experience : Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or a health care field.

Licenses and Certificates : Texas Class "C" Driver's License or equivalent from another state.

General Purpose

Under general supervision, responsible for implementing and monitoring epidemiological studies involving communicable and/or infectious diseases.

Typical Duties

Provide active surveillance for communicable and/or infectious diseases. Involves: review of medical records, demographic and statistical analysis, interviews with medical providers and patients, maintain registries of confirmed or suspected cases of specific illnesses, and presentation of the data and its analysis in written and verbal form. Conducts interviews and investigations in accordance with DIS performance standards. Develop research tools effective in eliciting needed information from target groups; secure necessary institutional clearances to obtain access to confidential medical and other records; define confidentiality requirements; collect, abstract, and analyze epidemiological, medical and clinical data from complex medical documentation including hospital, emergency room, outpatient, rehabilitation records, medical assistance records, and autopsy records. Enters data into the program's management information system. Completes epidemiologic and non-epidemiologic paperwork. Performs venipuncture in the field and clinic. Establishes and maintains relationships with local health care agencies, health care providers, laboratories, correctional facilities and other organizations to facilitate screening, diagnosis/treatment and reporting. Documents case management activities and conducts updates weekly. Maintains confidentiality in all aspects of duties. Perform related duties as required.
