Job Summary The primary purpose of this position is to ensure the safety, security and well‑being of the Hamline University campus community. Public Safety Officers enforce university policy, state and federal law and play a key role in crime prevention. Each officer must be completely knowledgeable of all areas of the position and hold performance to a high standard. Officers will familiarize themselves with all assignment areas to assist community members, prevent crime through active patrols, attention to detail and engagement of community members and guests. Officers must successfully complete all initial and sustainment training including, but not limited to, annual use of force and medical recertification.Essential Functions and Responsibilities Ensure safety and security of university grounds utilizing foot and vehicle patrolsProvide initial response to crimes, policy violations, emergencies, accidents and all other requests for assistanceLiaise with police, fire and emergency respondersDeescalate disruptive activity and detain and control persons engaged in criminal acts or endangering the safety of the communityWrite professional, detailed narrative and investigative reportsEnforce university policy, state and federal lawComplete designated NIMS and IC courses within 90 days of start dateRespond to life safety system alarms (fire, etc.) and supervise building evacuationsProfessionally respond to all calls for service (access requests, safety escorts, jump starts, etc.)Use security technical systems (CCTV, VMS, access control, alarm systems, elevator control, etc.)Remove trespassing individuals from campus when appropriateFunction as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) as required by the Clery ActSupport special events as directed by department leadershipComplete driver training and safely operate university vehicles as requiredComplete and retain required medical certifications (BLS/First Aid within 90 days; EMR within first year)Assist with large‑scale university events (e.g., commencement) as neededPerform any other duties as requestedReporting Relationships This position reports to: Illiana Cantu Delgado. Budget range: This position is not responsible for the management of a budget.Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Key Competencies Punctuality for assigned shiftsWorking knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Apps, reporting programs, camera systems, and basic security systemsAbility to respond effectively and respectfully to people of diverse backgrounds, affirming their worth and preserving individual, family, and community dignityExcellent verbal and non‑verbal communication skillsProficiency in writing clear and effective reportsBasic understanding of Clery Act requirements, Title IX, and MN Sexual Assault Law for higher educationAbility to pass initial and annual defensive tactics trainingCompetence in carrying and safely using all department‑issued equipmentExperience and sensitivity in working with students from diverse backgroundsWillingness and capability to cover staff shortages when necessaryMinimum Education and Experience High School diploma or GEDExcellent communication skills1+ year of experience with basic computer programs (Word, Excel, etc.)Ability to respond to dynamic, stressful incidents and make critical decisions with limited supervisionPreferred Education and Experience Valid driver's licenseAssociate degree from an accredited college or university1+ years of security experience at an institution of higher educationEmergency Medical Responder (EMR) certificationRequired Licensure/Certification N/AWorking Conditions and Equipment Must be able to work in outdoor seasonal extremesMust be able to respond to hazards including environmental, medical, fire, and blood‑borne pathogensMust be able to properly wear and use all department‑issued equipmentMust be able to occasionally lift 25-50 lbs.Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 80% of shift)Must be able to respond to situations involving aggressive people and other dangers associated with responding to criminal activityMust be able to bend, crouch, push, pull, kneel and climb stairs while carrying equipmentPay Rate $18 an hourAdditional Information Position: full time, 1.0 FTE, exempt, 12 months a yearShift: 10-hour shifts (11:30 AM – 9:30 PM)Schedule: rotating (e.g., Week 1 – Mon-Wed; Week 2 – Wed-Sat)Hamline University is an Equal Opportunity employer.
