OverviewPrince George's County Government's Department of Corrections is hiring Correctional Officer Private, Grade D‑21, for the 2027 fiscal year. This entry‑level position is part of the September 2026 Correctional Officer Entrance Level Training Academy and offers a $10,000 sign‑on bonus. Bilingual applicants are encouraged.ResponsibilitiesProvide care, custody, and control of inmates in a direct supervision environment.Conduct regular head counts of inmates on assigned posts.Monitor inmate behavior and report unusual activity to ensure safety and security.Assist other Correctional Officers in the management of inmates.Conduct regular searches of inmate areas such as cells, recreation rooms, and showers for contraband.Manage confrontational situations to maintain security.Perform CPR and/or first aid when necessary.Investigate and respond to emergencies within the Department of Corrections.Prepare routine reports and records electronically.Maintain the inventory of various security equipment.Provide counsel and assistance to inmates.Ensure inmates are afforded fair and equitable treatment.QualificationsMinimum qualifications:U.S. Citizen or Resident Alien status.High School graduate or GED certificate recognized by the Maryland State Board of Education.At least 18 years of age.Valid U.S. driver's license with at least six months post‑license driving experience.Willing to serve as an essential employee, reporting to work or remaining at work when required.Conditions of EmploymentWork in a correctional facility.Available for shift work, including weekends and holidays.Wear issued uniforms and protective apparel.Complete the Correctional Entrance Level Training Academy.Meet all training and performance standards.Pass pre‑employment checks: background investigation, drug screening, COPAT, medical exam, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.Serve as an essential employee during emergencies.Selection ProcessPhase 1: Submit online application; complete preliminary questionnaire & criminal history check; pass COPAT; pass oral board interview.Phase 2: Provide valid photo ID, social security card, high school diploma or GED (bachelor's may substitute); complete Personal History Statement, fingerprinting, background investigation & orientation, medical exam & drug screening, polygraph exam, and psychological screening.Phase 3: Accept offer; complete onboarding and orientation; may be assigned a temporary Green Officer role; complete and graduate from the Training Academy.DisqualificationsPrior disqualification for this or other public safety positions.Deception or falsification of information on application.Poor work history or driving record.Criminal convictions or illegal drug offenses.Failure to meet physical and mental standards.NotificationsApplicants will receive notifications via email.
