Definition, Essential Functions

Under general supervision, maintains the flow of traffic in the school zone to provide for the safety of children going to and from school; directs traffic to assure a safety and practical speed throughout the school zone; stops traffic as needed to maintain stability throughout the school period; and performs related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by incumbents of this classification.)

Tasks
Directs traffic through school zone and bus parking area; guides and assists children in crossing the street and in compliance with the traffic signals; maintains security of the children throughout the school zone area; helps the school buses to move through the school bus unloading area safely and without difficulty; directs the flow of traffic to reduce speed and increase awareness of the children.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or GED

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This classification involves working with children and adults in school zones during morning arrival and afternoon departure of children in school zones. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office promotes a drug/alcohol-free work environment through the use of pre-employment and random drug testing.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Knowledge of the types of situations which most often result in injury or death of children in school zones.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the protection of children in school zones.
  • Knowledge of methodologies used in the direction of traffic in school zones.
  • Skill in maintaining one's personal and professional standards.
  • Skill in interacting with adults entering school zones.
  • Skill in using diplomacy while directing traffic in school zones.
  • Skill in documenting traffic incidents involving school zone infractions.
