Principal Appian Developer

Position Type: Contract to Hire

Clearance: Must initiate SF86 paperwork on first date of hire

Pay: $60-$80 an hour

Location: D.C. Metro near Chantilly and McLean, VA. Flexible 1 day a week work from home.

Position Overview

LaunchCode is seeking multiple experienced Appian professionals to support mission-critical initiatives within the Intelligence Community. This role involves designing and delivering secure, enterprise-scale workflow and automation solutions that support complex operational environments.

The Principal Appian Developer will lead projects through the full software development life cycle-defining requirements, designing architecture, developing features, and implementing custom applications. Responsibilities include working within an agile environment to analyze business processes and technical needs, launching relational data models in production, developing APIs to integrate with external systems, and mentoring junior consultants throughout fast-paced implementations.

Successful candidates will be self-driven technologists capable of operating independently within highly secure environments while collaborating with cross-functional teams to build scalable, resilient solutions aligned with mission objectives. This is a fully onsite (~1 day flex per week) role in Northern Virginia supporting high-impact programs requiring strong technical execution and attention to security. Ideally, this position will mentor a small team and be comfortable interfacing with external company partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain secure applications using the Appian low-code platform.
  • Architect scalable workflows and business process automation solutions aligned with enterprise architecture standards.
  • Configure and customize Appian components including process models, interfaces, integrations, and data structures.
  • Integrate Appian applications with enterprise services and systems such as: Active Directory and identity management solutions, Classification and records management systems, Security, monitoring, and logging frameworks.
  • Ensure compliance with security policies, governance standards, and accreditation requirements within classified environments.
  • Support full application lifecycle activities including requirements analysis, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing enhancements.
  • Troubleshoot performance issues and optimize application scalability and reliability.
  • Collaborate with mission stakeholders, enterprise architects, and development teams to deliver high-quality solutions.
  • Document system designs, processes, and operational procedures as required.
Requirements

Passion for mentoring/developing others and experience leading small teams through post through post-sale software implementation

Ability to work with clients to define business processes and gather functional and technical system requirements

Excellent communication skills, passion for technology and continuous learning, and affinity for asking "why" and solving the right problems

History of success on cross-functional teams; experience building products using agile methodologies (pair programming, stand-ups, planning sessions, and sprints)

Basic understanding of object oriented programming, experience working with relational databases and database design/data modeling, and SQL skills (writing queries, joins, views, etc)

Knowledge of software testing practices (test-driven development, automated test suites within a continuous integration framework); integrations experience using APIs such as REST and SOAP, JDBC connections, and web services; familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Analytics, Machine Learning, Google Cloud, Application Integration, Database, Developer Tools, Management & Governance, and Elastic Containers (preferred)

Basic Qualifications

Ability and interest to obtain a secret-level security clearance with the ability and willingness to perform work within cleared facilities (SCIF work is required)

7+ years of experience with hands-on software development or technical consulting with a strong appian experience

B.S./B.A. in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics or related field/degree

Willingness to travel; 10% or less annually to support customer engagement
