Art Bartell (Animal Control)Date Available: ASAPClosing Date: 07/06/2026Department : Animal ControlSchedule : Tuesday – Sunday, including holidays.Summary Enforces the Illinois Animal Control Act and the Champaign County Ordinance regarding animals, rabies, and related diseases.Primary Responsibilities Investigate and capture animals suspected of being rabid.Conduct checks on animals subject to quarantine.Patrol for stray dogs for impoundment purposes.Transport animals to the shelter.Write up animals captured for fine purposes and identification.Verify claims of livestock killed by animals.Enforce animal control ordinances.Check and clean van and equipment, repair when necessary.Prepare general office reports and assist with clerical work.Check out money.Attend court hearings.Answer telephone calls from officials and the public.Pick up and maintain registration certificates from veterinarians for office usage.Qualifications High school diploma or GED and six months of experience working with animals is desirable –or- equivalent combination of education and experience.Thorough knowledge of animal behavior, animal control laws, and skill in handling animals.Skilled in driving an animal control van and using various snaring equipment.Compensation Wage Range: $21.52 - $29.52 per hour, depending on qualifications.Champaign County offers a comprehensive benefits package, including paid time off, health insurance, life insurance, and employer contributions to a defined-benefit retirement plan.
