Job Responsibilities
  • Under general supervision, plans, coordinate and direct the actions of the assigned security staff.
  • Oversees custody and control of Inmates in assigned areas.
  • Investigates complaints and violations, arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
  • Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
  • Makes routine checks of the buildings to ensure Subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely.
  • Make sanitation, safety and security inspections of all buildings and building contents.
  • Supervises and verifies the accuracy of inmate counts.
  • Remains up to date on SCDC policy, procedures and inmate rules and regulations.
  • Prepares and submits written reports, ensuring they are submitted in a timely manner.
Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
State of South Carolina Minimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
  • A high school diploma and three (3) years of experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
  • A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
  • Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.
