What You Will DoThe Engineering Services - Fire Protection Engineering (ES‑FPE) Group is the Laboratory's central fire protection engineering and program support entity, responsible for providing institutional technical direction and support for the Lab's nuclear and nonnuclear facilities and programs. ES‑FPE is seeking Fire Protection Specialists to provide subject matter expertise in facility design & construction and facility operations & maintenance.Fire Protection and Life Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) SupportProvide technical support to laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations.Construction Project SupportProvide plan review and approval for construction projects.Lab‑wide Fire Alarm System Operations and MaintenanceOversee the operations and maintenance of the lab‑wide fire alarm system.Fire Protection and Life Safety System Commissioning, Testing, and MaintenanceOversee the commissioning, periodic testing, and maintenance of fire protection and life safety systems.Code Compliance and Regulatory SupportDevelop equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes.Provide technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence.This position will be filled at either the Fire Protection Specialist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.What You NeedMinimum Job RequirementsFire Protection Specialist 3 ($87,800 - $143,000)Demonstrative ability to perform detailed technical reviews of facility design documents including designs, plans, submittals, project specifications and similar documents and provides effective, actionable commentsAdvanced experience in effectively communicating compliance concerns both verbally and in writing for management, customers, peers, and/or craft personnelExperience in design or plans review of fire protection and life safety features of building and of fire protection systems, or experience in documented assessment, analysis, or evaluation of fire hazards and risks of facilities or processesProven leadership in teaching and mentoring more junior staffFire Protection Specialist 4 ($96,600 - $158,000)Demonstrated leadership aptitude including clear focus on professional customer service, as well as regulatory complianceExperience in evaluating fire protection needs, concerns, and requirements to solve complex problems through creative problem solving and appropriate compromiseExperience in developing process, program, or project documentation to incorporate and/or implement fire protection or life safety objectives and criteriaThe successful candidate will be expected to perform the following duties of this position, but duties are not necessarily limited to: Providing fire protection and life safety subject matter expert (SME) technical support to the laboratory facility management and programmatic organizations; preparing and maintaining fire hazard analyses and related documentation for complex laboratory, radiological, and nuclear facilities; construction project support, plan review and approval; Lab‑wide fire alarm system operations and maintenance; wildland fire risk reduction initiatives; performing facility fire protection and life safety system assessments; fire protection and life safety system commissioning, periodic testing and maintenance oversight; preparation of equivalencies and exemptions, development of equivalencies and exemptions to DOE Directives, building and NFPA codes; and technical reviews of proposed new activities for fire protection program adherence. You will work with all levels of LANL management and interact with external agencies and/or community organizations, and review and recommend actions on fire protection program related issues.Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 3Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate coursework may be desirable.Education/Experience at Fire Protection Specialist 4Position requires a Bachelor's Degree and 12 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. At this level, post graduate coursework may be expected.Desired QualificationsActive Q ClearanceCertification as Certified Fire Protection Specialist, Certified Plans Examiner, and/or Certified Fire Inspector (NFPA or ICC)Experience with protection of property, assets, and operations as highly‑protected risks (HPR), such as FM Global datasheets, or AXA XL property risk guidelinesExperience with fire protection and life safety aspects applicable to chemical processes, wet chemistry and laser laboratories, radiological laboratories, high‑hazard, and nuclear facilitiesKnowledge of DOE‑O‑420.1C, DOE‑STD‑1066, LANL Engineering Standards Manual, and Conduct of Engineering (CoE) work principlesWork LocationThe work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.Position CommitmentRegular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
