Must complete Tennessee Correction Academy course upon appointment.OverviewThe Correctional Officer 1 is an entry‑level position that performs correctional work of average difficulty at a state penal institution, including custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates and may work any shift.ResponsibilitiesSupervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families on problems; evaluate inmates on hygiene, attitudes, and submit evaluation to counseling department.Attend staff, disciplinary board, and training meetings (riot control, escape prevention, first aid).Prepare reports: daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job and pay records, daily counts, requisitions for supplies.Operate equipment: two‑way radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, television cameras, and may operate motor vehicles.Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activity.Break up fights or other dangerous situations by persuasion or physical force.Explain existing policies and procedures to others.QualificationsApplicants must have:High‑school diploma or equivalent.Willingness to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.Good moral character as determined by investigation.Complete criminal history disclosure and release of records.Provide fingerprint sample for criminal history check.No felony convictions; any honorable discharge from armed forces.Pass physical exam and psychological evaluation consistent with ADA.Pass pre‑employment drug screening.Possess valid motor vehicle operator's license (position dependent).Complete Tennessee Correction Academy instruction upon appointment.Employment ConditionsEmployees may be assigned to any of three work shifts and any post assignment; this may change over time.
