Location: Treasurer's Office 55 West Church Street Martinsville, VA 24112 Starting Salary: $34,000 annually
Position Summary
The Treasurer's Office is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented individual for a fast-paced, front-line customer service position. This role requires strong communication skills, cash handling experience, computer proficiency, and the ability to multitask efficiently in a high-traffic office environment. The successful candidate will provide excellent customer service while processing payments, maintaining accurate records, and supporting daily office operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Accept and process payments for utilities, taxes, and miscellaneous bills using automated accounting systems.
- Provide professional and courteous customer service by assisting citizens with questions regarding payments, billing, due dates, and account information.
- Accurately handle cash, checks, and credit card transactions while maintaining balanced cash drawers and preparing daily deposits.
- Prepare daily cash receipt reports and assist with additional financial and administrative reports as requested.
- Maintain and organize records, receipts, invoices, bills, and related documentation.
- Answer, screen, route, and document incoming telephone calls and office inquiries.
- Operate standard office equipment including computers, calculators, copiers, fax machines, printers, shredders, and mailing equipment.
- Utilize Microsoft Excel and other computer programs to maintain records, track data, and prepare reports.
- Assist with preparing and distributing bills, notices, and correspondence.
- Receive and organize office supplies and department equipment orders.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience in:
- Customer service
- Cash handling and money management
- Data entry and office support
- Experience using Microsoft Excel and other basic computer applications preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with the public in person and over the phone.
- Ability to accurately handle money, count cash, make change, and balance cash drawers.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in maintaining records and processing financial transactions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, data entry, and basic office software applications.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and complete both routine and complex administrative tasks.
- Knowledge of basic math, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Ability to work efficiently in a busy office environment while managing multiple responsibilities.
Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
- May require extended periods of standing, concentration, typing, and repetitive motion.
- Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds, including files and office supplies.
- Occasional travel for training or meetings may be required.
