Evidence & Property Control Specialist I (Security)

The Office of Chief Medical Examiner investigates cases of persons who die within New York City from criminal violence, by accident, by suicide, suddenly when in apparent health, when unattended by a physician, in a correctional facility or in any suspicious or unusual manner or where an application is made pursuant to law for a permit to cremate a body of a person. Under administrative direction, with latitude for independent judgement, the incumbent will perform the following duties but are not limited to:

  • Receive, dispense and be accountable for narcotics, firearms, cash, ballistics evidence, vehicles or any other property held in the Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME).
  • Move, transport & deliver property and vehicles to and within various OCME commands for vouchering, processing, inspection, testing, storage, etc.
  • Operates vehicles in performance of evidence and property control duties.
  • Provide security in areas where evidence & property is held and stored.
  • Monitor alarm systems, recording systems and security cameras.
  • Verify the authorization of persons entering or leaving the premises and ensures the departure of unauthorized persons.
  • Be responsible for the overall physical security of facilities and monitors designated areas of public buildings and surroundings.
  • Call for assistance to provide security, responds to calls for such assistance and makes subsequent written reports.
  • Assist in completing forms and verifying the identity of persons, including fingerprinting of persons receiving property, in order to obtain release of property in department custody.
  • Conduct inventory and provides chain of custody documentation.
  • Prepare and maintain visitor logs, written or typed records, incident reports, communications and computerized reports and/or logs of evidence and property information.
  • Operate computer terminal to input and retrieve information to ascertain the disposition of cases.
  • Responsible for the proper packaging, labeling, vouchering and signing for evidence and property being dispensed or received.
  • Inspect and search vehicles and examines Vehicle Identification Numbers and motor block numbers.

SPECIAL NOTE: Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing. This position has been identified as "essential." During emergency events, "essential" positions may require 24-hour availability. LICENSE REQUIREMENT: A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in State of New York. Employees must maintain the license for the duration of their employment. WORK AUTHORIZATION: Authorization to work in the Unites States is required for this position. Office of Chief Medical Examiner does not provide sponsorship for international employees for visa applications, extensions, or status changes, including STEM/OPT visas. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they meet all qualifying requirements for this position at the time of application.
