Job SummaryUnder immediate training supervision, incumbents perform a variety of public safety training functions in preparation to protect life and property from fire, medical emergency, accident, or natural disaster. The position is flexibly staffed at the Firefighter I‑IV level and will be reclassified to the appropriate Firefighter classification upon completion of the Fire Academy.ResponsibilitiesLearn the basics of fire suppression, equipment usage, first aid, and emergency procedures.Participate in classroom and field training activities.Obtain State of Colorado EMT certification by the end of the designated Fire Academy.Successfully complete the designated Fire Academy within the given time frame.Perform other duties as assigned.QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED; must be at least 18 years of age.No specific experience required.Valid driver's license with a safe driving record.CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) or equivalent test by the application deadline.State of Colorado or National Registry EMT or higher certification preferred; if not already certified, basic EMT certification must be obtained by the end of the Fire Academy.Potential requirement to obtain and maintain a State of Colorado Paramedic Certification for Firefighters hired without EMT‑Paramedic level certification.Required Licenses & CertificationsCPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test) or equivalent.State of Colorado Basic EMT certification (to be obtained during the Fire Academy).Optional: State of Colorado or National Registry EMT or Paramedic certification.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of City of Thornton policies, procedures, and goals.Knowledge of emergency medical procedures and medical supplies.Skill in learning and applying a wide variety of emergency medical and firefighting duties, apparatus, and equipment.Skill in operating emergency vehicles during response operations.Skill in conducting fire public education to all age groups.Physical ability and endurance to perform strenuous labor in stressful conditions.Ability to complete medical and fit testing for respiratory protective equipment.Ability to work effectively in a team environment and communicate well orally and in writing.Ability to use standard office equipment and computer applications.Ability to work a varying schedule and shifts.Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with City employees, City boards, other agencies, the business community, and the public.Physical And Mental RequirementsThe position requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and other movements. It is considered very heavy work, potentially requiring force of over 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20 pounds constantly. Visual acuity, exposure to extreme weather, noise, vibration, and other hazards are part of the job.
