Base Pay: $86,028.80 Annual.Summary Records proceedings in the courts using shorthand, machine shorthand, oral stenography, or other authorized method and prepares accurate transcripts for appeals or future court use.Essential Duties and Responsibilities Takes full shorthand notes of all proceedings, including pretrial matters, voir dire, opening & closing statements, evidence, final arguments, and rulings.Attends all sessions of the court unless directed otherwise.Files and maintains all notes of court proceedings.Preserves notes for three years for civil cases and 15 years for criminal cases from the date of final judgement.Prepares accurate transcripts as instructed.Marks exhibits before or during trial and maintains custody throughout the trial; files exhibits with clerk after completion of trial.Reads back court proceedings when requested.Conducts witness depositions, receives, executes, and returns commissions, and makes a certificate of proceedings in any county within the judicial district.Reports proceedings in Judge's chambers or over the telephone.Prepares jury charges in civil cases and responses to jury questions.Substitutes for Court Manager, Court Clerk, Bailiff, or other Court Reporters.Performs secretarial services assisting administrative court functions.Prepares orders as dictated by the Judge for filing in the official file.Operates typewriter or computer to transcribe recorded material, or dictates material into recording machine.Records proceedings of quasi-judicial hearings and formal & informal meetings.Supervisory Responsibilities This position has no supervisory responsibilities.Qualifications High school diploma or GED, plus graduation from a court reporting school and sufficient experience to permit certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter by the Supreme Court of Texas.Certification as a Certified Shorthand Reporter by the Supreme Court of Texas (V.T.C.A., Government Code, Sec 52.023).Must complete 20 continuing education credits relevant to shorthand reporting to renew certification.Language skills: correct use of English, legal & medical terminology, and general knowledge of Texas law and court procedure; ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, technical procedures, or regulations.Mathematical skills: ability to add, subtract, multiply, divide in all units, calculate rates, ratios, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.Reasoning ability: apply common sense to follow instructions in written, oral, or diagram form; handle problems with multiple variables in standardized situations.Typing speed of at least 55 words per minute with correct punctuation.Strong concentration, ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.Intense concentration required for speaking, hearing, and handling documents.Spanish speaking ability is desirable.Must be able to drive a vehicle on official business with a driving record meeting County standards.Physical demands: ability to sit, stand, walk, lift up to 25 pounds, use hands, reach, and grasp; vision required for close and distance work.Work environment: occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles; moderate noise level.Employment Conditions Job Post End Date - 07-11-2026.
