Under general supervision, to respond to fire alarms and other emergency (or non-emergency) calls involving the suppression, extinguishment, and prevention of fires (structural and wildland); to protect life, property, and environment, including rescue and salvage operations and mitigation of hazardous materials incidents; to clean, maintain and repair (when possible) fire station property and environment; to train and drill for emergency preparedness; to use computers to log calls, log training data, and communicate with co-workers, supervisors, and the public; and to perform related duties as required.This class is distinguished from the next higher class of Engineer because of the required additional experience, training, certification, and responsibilities.Work is performed outdoors, occasionally in inclement weather where the incumbent is exposed to noise, dirt, dust, and hazardous machinery.The ability to perform essential job functions as defined by NFPA 1001 under extreme conditions such as restricted space areas, limited or no visibility, and high heat environments. This position may require duties to be performed during night time operations, IDLH environments with protective clothing/SCBA.The work involves sitting, standing, walking, bending and stooping. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.Responds to emergency calls, fire alarms and non-emergency calls for assistance as a member of a fire company.Portrays a professional attitude and maintains a positive public image.Operates EMS related equipment, radio, illumination generators, smoke ejectors, etc.; administers first aid; lays and connects hose lines; holds nozzles and directs water streams; raises and climbs ladders; enters burning buildings to remove persons from danger; uses portable extinguishers, axes, bars, hooks, lines, power-driven tools, and other equipment.Ventilates buildings to release heat and smoke; places salvage covers to prevent water damage; overhauls and cleans up after a fire; checks for fire extension and to prevent rekindling.May establish wildland fire lines by cutting, hoeing, raking and shoveling.Must work within and follow the department Incident Command System.Return of company equipment to its proper place before leaving the emergency scene.
