Position InformationNew Hanover County is accepting applications for a full‑time Firefighter/Apparatus Operator. The incumbent will respond as the primary apparatus operator to incidents including fires, emergency medical requests, technical rescues, hazardous materials, and other emergencies that may pose risk to people or property.Protect life and property by responding to emergencies.Secure the scene, extinguish the fire, and salvage structures and contents.Provide basic emergency medical care as a first responder.Perform maintenance of vehicles and fire stations.Conduct pre‑plan fire inspections.Act in the absence of the Company Officer on assigned shifts.Represent Fire Services to the public at events.HoursRotating 24‑hour shifts from 7:00 AM– 7:00 AM, including weekends and holidays.Must be available to work in emergency situations and report according to established department policies.SalaryBase Salary $56,351 + Overtime $4,876.52 + Holiday Pay $3,901.22 = starting pay $65,128.74. Salary is determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.TRAINEE RATE: Applicants meeting minimum education and experience, and possessing all required certifications except the Driver Operator Pumps accreditation, may be considered at a trainee rate of $18.48 per hour until certifications are obtained.
