Position SummaryThe school crossing guard for the elementary school is responsible for ensuring the safety and assisting students navigate crossing the street before and after school.Essential DutiesAssessing traffic flow to identify potential hazardsDirecting students and other individuals to cross the streetRemoving potential hazards from the assigned crossing areaReporting unsafe driving to school administration or law enforcementMonitoring rapidly changing traffic conditions and responding accordinglyExplaining the crossing rules to pedestriansProviding feedback regarding the safety of assigned crosswalksEnsure a safety vest is always wornAdditional DutiesPerforms other related tasks as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.NoteThe above description is illustrative of tasks and responsibilities. It is not meant to be all inclusive of every task or responsibility.Knowledge, Skills And AbilitiesStrong observational skills to monitor traffic flow, pedestrian movement and overall surroundingsAbility to clearly and calmly communicate instructions to children, parents and drivers, ensuring a safe crossing experienceCapability to remain upright for extended periods, work outdoors in various weather conditions and respond quickly in emergenciesFamiliarity with local traffic laws, pedestrian safety rules and crossing guard protocolsProficiency with equipment such as stop signs, safety vests, hand signals and crossing aidsEffective at managing interactions with children, parents and the community, promoting safe and respectful behaviorAbility to think and remain calm under pressure to handle unexpected traffic or pedestrian situations effectivelyPunctuality and reliability to ensure consistent presence during designated school or crosswalk hoursQualificationsHigh school diploma or GEDValid driver licenseBackground checkPHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDSAbility to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined above, in addition to the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk and sit. The employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear. The employee is regularly required to use hands to manipulate, handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb steps, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee is required to supervise students requiring the employee to match walking speed that matches the student and may at times require the ability to run to safeguard students. The employee may occasionally lift, carry, move and/or, when appropriately trained, restrain school-age students. Employee must occasionally move equipment and/or supplies. Employee is occasionally required to drive. Employee is regularly required to handle stressful situations and resolve conflicts. The job is performed for the most part in a school setting with occasional outside weather conditions.
