Who May ApplyThis position is only open to Colorado state residents.Job LocationThe vacancy is at the Limon Correctional Facility (LCF) in Limon, CO.Job OverviewThe Correctional Officer II is accountable for providing lead work and limited supervision responsibilities. Duties include assignment to a single or multiple person control center, mail room, meal hall, canteen, visitation center, medical facility, housing/living unit, and coordination of activities to regulate inmates, civilians, property, security, custody and control functions.ResponsibilitiesProviding lead work guidance and training to assigned positions.Recommending assignments for correctional officers.Contributing to performance plans.Promoting a safe and secure environment through observation, communication, and adherence to regulations and the Code of Penal Discipline.Enforcing statutes, regulations, orders, directives, and procedures.Managing inmate behavior and encouraging personal accountability.Monitoring and controlling access to the facility and restricted areas.Training staff on proper use of controlled items, keys, tools, equipment, and chemicals.Conducting security searches, inmate counts, and controlling contraband.Responding to emergencies such as fights, fires, and escapes; preparing reports.Seizing, holding, controlling, or subduing violent or threatening persons as needed.Performing other duties as assigned.Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED certificate.Two (2) years of corrections‑related, law‑enforcement patrol, or military experience.Work experience must be fully described in the application; part‑time experience is prorated.Corrections experience includes direct service to inmates such as correctional officer, social work, nursing, food service, maintenance, or program implementation.Required CompetenciesAbility to follow instructions.Self‑directed, motivated work ethic.Strong written and oral communication skills.Excellent interpersonal and critical decision‑making skills.Attention to detail and thoroughness.Effective time management and ability to de‑escalate situations.Adaptability, self‑control, and resilience under pressure.Ability to read, comprehend, and communicate fluently in English.Capacity to create accessible documents following plain‑language guidelines.Preferred QualificationsExperience with the Colorado Department of Corrections.Strong organizational commitment and teamwork skills.Experience with housing and security operations.Good computer and coaching or mentoring skills.Conditions of EmploymentMust be at least 18 years old.Possess a valid Colorado driver's license; safe driving record required.No felony convictions or disqualifying criminal conduct.Must have valid U.S. work authorization; no H‑1B sponsorship.Must complete the six‑week Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, including defense tactics.Must be physically able to perform defensive tactics and other physical duties.Must pass required background investigation and drug testing.All new employees subject to tobacco‑free policy and drug screening; marijuana use is prohibited while on duty.Equal Employment OpportunityThe State of Colorado is an equal‑opportunity employer.
