Deputy Sheriff – Leon County Sheriff's Office (Effective January 1, 2026)Position OverviewThe Deputy Sheriff performs general law‑enforcement duties, preserving and protecting life and property, preventing and investigating crime, and maintaining public order. Work may involve personal danger and requires discretion, judgment, and the ability to act without direct supervision. Deputies may be assigned to special units such as Forest or Search and Rescue, Homeless Outreach, School Resource, or Community Safety and Mentoring Programs (CSMB), each with additional responsibilities.ResponsibilitiesPursue and arrest suspects in accordance with legal protocols.Investigate complaints, collect evidence, and report findings or take action under jurisdiction.Provide general information and advice to citizens.Prevent crime, suppress vice, and detain offenders while maintaining public safety.Keep confidential information to safeguard investigations.Observe suspicious conduct, interview, and acquire information to reduce criminal activity.Maintain thorough knowledge of Leon County boundaries, streets, and landmarks.Stay updated on Florida State Statutes, federal law, and county ordinances.Respond to emergencies with rescue, first aid, and emergency services.Provide referrals for domestic and civil crises.Advise the public on crime‑prevention methods.Remain alert for crime‑related threats and inform agency policy and informants.Respond to in‑progress criminal activity, restore order, and gather evidence.Patrol assigned areas, prioritize high‑hazard locations, and re‑check at intervals.Be available for service at all times by radio or telephone.Write and submit reports before shift end, unless authorized otherwise.Take official custody of lost, stolen, or abandoned property.Testify at court and in depositions as needed.Conduct investigations independently or within a coordinated effort.Monitor conditions posing threats to public safety.Maintain cleanliness and readiness of equipment.Assist in other agency areas on a limited basis.Perform all duties without posing a direct threat to others.Special Unit Duties (Delegate when assigned)Forest or Search and Rescue: Coordinate search operations with the US National Forest Service, volunteers, and State Emergency Management; manage responses to wildfires and natural hazards; patrol forests and provide safety reports on trails.Homeless Outreach/Mental Health: Respond to mental‑health calls, work with crisis specialists and providers, conduct referrals for housing, treatment, and social services.School Resource: Provide security, counsel and educate youth, conduct screenings, and connect at‑risk students with community resources.Community Safety & Mentoring (CSMB): Build trust with men and boys at risk, conduct screenings, offer referrals, maintain documentation, and organize community forums.QualificationsHigh School Diploma required; Associate's degree preferred.Minimum 19 years old, US citizen, good moral character, and completion of a Florida‑approved basic law‑enforcement training program.Florida certification exam passed; no disqualifying factors.Valid Florida driver's license with satisfactory driving record.Primary residence within Leon County or adjacent counties listed.Physical ability to stand, sit, do extended periods, lift 150 lbs, push/pull moderate loads, bend/squat, and meet standard physical agility, firearms, defensive tactics, and driving courses.Knowledge of applicable laws, community geography, first aid, oral & written instructions, and investigative techniques.Ability to remain calm under stress, work teams, perform at court, and comply with agency core values and ethics.Availability for rotating 8–12 hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and emergencies.BenefitsHealth insurance with 77.5%–87.5% employer contribution.Life insurance equal to one annual salary, paid 100% by the agency.Florida Retirement System with pension or investment options.Paid vacation, sick, and personal leave.Tuition assistance and incentives for advanced degrees (sworn positions).Additional benefits: deferred compensation, dental/vision, cafeteria savings, disability, and identity theft protection.Bonus ProgramNewly appointed full‑time certified law‑enforcement officers who are not previously employed as officers in Florida, and appointed after July 1, 2022, may qualify for a one‑time bonus payment of $5,000.
