Introduction

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park is one of Scottsdale’s most beloved community destinations. The one-of-a-kind park offers visitors a chance to explore historic locomotives, ride a scenic one-mile track, enjoy hands-on exhibits, and experience Arizona’s railroad heritage in an interactive and family-friendly setting. With thousands of guests visiting each year, the park combines history, operations, education, and recreation in a way that creates memorable moments for visitors of all ages.

The Recreation Leader II - Steam Engine position plays a key role in delivering that experience by supporting the daily operation of steam and diesel locomotives, assisting with railroad ride activities, and helping maintain a safe, welcoming environment for guests throughout the park.

The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong mechanical aptitude and a passion for railroading with a willingness to learn more about the park’s railroad history and experience in:
  • Operating steam locomotive equipment
  • Operating diesel locomotives or other related heavy equipment
  • Using tools and performing minor mechanical adjustments during operations
  • Working with a dynamic customer base and adapting to busy, guest-focused environment
  • Connecting with supervisors, teammates, and guests in person or through radio, phone, or messages
  • Monitoring safety practices and enforcing park rules while ensuring high-quality customer service

Anticipated starting salary for this position may be up to mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity. The full salary range is listed above and mid-point for this position is $25.54/hour.

Please note: Due to this position being part-time, the classification is unclassified, meaning it is at-will and serves at the discretion of the City. These positions have limited benefits as required by law.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • No education required for this position.
  • A minimum of six months' experience in a customer service position.

Licensing, Certifications, and Other Requirements
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age at the time of hire or promotion.
  • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the city, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on department/section assignment.
