OverviewThe Sheriff's Office Detention Division is responsible for the safe keeping of inmates awaiting trial or sentenced to serve time in the county jail. Detention Officers are responsible for processing all incoming inmates, supervising day‑to‑day activities of inmates, maintaining inmate records, ensuring inmates make all court appearances, coordinating inmate transfers to other facilities, conducting daily sick calls, coordinating inmate visitation, and maintaining inmates' property.Pre-Employment RequirementsBe of good moral character.Be a citizen of the United States.Be at least 21 years old.Be a high school graduate, or the equivalent (GED).Be able to produce a negative result on a drug screen.Pass a thorough background investigation, including a personal interview.Not possess a prohibitive criminal history.Post-Employment Training RequirementsNC Department of Justice Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) – 182 hours.TCSO Field Training Program – 336 hours.Annual NC Department of Justice Mandated In‑Service Training – 20 to 32 hours.Division of Criminal Information (DCI) training – 181 hours.Essential FunctionsEnsures the safety and security of inmates within the County jail; controls inmates by performing routine facility checks and conducting head counts.Receives and processes inmates into custody of the institution; searches prisoners; takes charge of personal property.Verifies release orders.Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments.Verifies inquiries pertaining to inmate status.Oversees the handling and distribution of medications and meals.Enters information into the system and updates records and files as necessary.Maintains visitation logs.Performs other related duties as assigned.Physical DemandsThis work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, and occasional exertion of more than 100 pounds of force. Tasks include speaking or hearing, standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching, pushing or pulling, and lifting. The job also requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color perception, night vision, and peripheral vision. Vocal communication is required, as is hearing to perceive spoken word and to make fine distinctions in sound. The role may involve operating machines, motor vehicles, or equipment, and requires observation of surroundings and activities.Work EnvironmentThe primary setting is indoors, though occasional work may occur outdoors in cold weather. Employees may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, blood‑borne pathogens, and other hazards. Wearing specialized personal protective equipment may be required. Conditions can be wet, humid, or involve not‑weather related obligations. The environment can be moderately noisy.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge of the security, rules, regulations, and procedures of the institution.Knowledge of modern penology practices related to the supervision and care of persons in institutionalized restraint.Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly.Ability to detect potential behavioral problems of inmates.Ability to detect early symptoms of common health problems.Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately.Ability to supervise large groups of inmates.Ability to prepare records and reports.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates, attorneys, and the general public.Minimum Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or its equivalent. No specific experience required; an equivalent combination of education and experience is acceptable.Required Licenses or CertificationsDetention Officer and Taser certifications required. Possession of or ability to acquire First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications is required.
