Essential Duties
  • Performs a variety of police duties in patrolling University property on foot, bicycle, or vehicle to detect crime or violation of criminal law and/or University regulations.
  • Must be able to work rotating shifts, outdoors, and in a variety of assignments.
  • Inspects University facilities for safety or crime prevention.
  • Takes reports of crimes, injuries, accidents, and other events that affect the University.
  • Conducts initial investigations into criminal activity.
  • Enforces state laws and University policies and rules.
  • Conducts crime prevention programs, as directed.
  • Promotes public awareness of crime risk and prevention methods.
  • Appears in court to testify on behalf of the University.
  • Notifies supervisor and/or proper authorities of unusual, suspicious, or hazardous events.
  • Works special events and activities beyond the regularly assigned workweek.
  • Performs other law enforcement duties as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required. Education beyond the minimum preferred.
  • Two years of successful work experience in a public-contact occupation required.
  • One year of law enforcement work experience preferred.
  • Knowledge and skill in computer applications, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, preferred.
  • Willingness to learn computer applications required.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a US citizen.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation.
  • Must successfully complete the basic training for police officers as required by the Board of Standards and Training within one year of employment if not already certified.
  • Must have a valid driver's license.
  • Must be in good physical condition as evidenced by successfully passing a physical test based upon the Mississippi Board of Standards and Training's physical assessment (70%).
  • Knowledge of Police Department rules and regulations, state law and city ordinances, standard law enforcement practices and procedures preferred, but not required.
  • Appropriate use of firearms and other standard law enforcement tools; problem solving and conflict mediation.
  • Ability to establish effective and courteous working relationships with fellow officers, faculty, students, the public and other agencies; ability to act with tact and impartially; ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing; ability to perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Must be able to deal with stressful situations, including life-threatening incidents.
  • Must not object to using force against another person when legally justified.

The employee may occasionally have to lift or move up to 25, 50, 100 or more than 100 lbs. Tasks may involve controlling human subjects. Tasks may included muscular strain, including running and driving a vehicle. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
