OverviewCorrectional Officers II provide supervisory work involving the custody, treatment and training of incarcerated individuals confined within a correctional facility. They supervise correctional staff and incarcerated individuals in a correctional setting, providing supervision and technical assistance to lower ranking officers in a unit or as part of their on‑the‑job training. Work is performed in accordance with standard operating procedures of the facility and under the supervision of a shift supervisor or a technical superior who assigns tasks and reviews work through personal observation and report. The officer may conduct transportation of medication from a clinical facility to the correctional facility, verifying correct medication and count; is responsible for conducting searches and inventories of property, sharps, and other items as needed; evaluates staff and performance, prepares written reports, investigates grievances, participates in disciplinary hearings, and may participate in revision and implementation of facility procedures and programs. Performs related duties as required.This position follows a 2‑2‑3 schedule: two consecutive days on duty, two days off, and three consecutive days on duty, repeating. Overtime work is required to maintain safe staffing levels and is a condition of employment.Work ScheduleThe 2‑2‑3 rotation offers predictable work hours, flexibility, and longer stretches of consecutive days off, including a 3‑day weekend every other week. Shift placement may vary depending on seniority.Environmental FactorsDuties are performed largely within a correctional facility and the immediate area of inmates. High‑stress situations are predictable and frequent. Physical assault or injury may occur. Transportation and supervision of inmates outside the facility may be required. A valid motor‑vehicle operator's license is required. Overtime and emergency duty are predictable. Shift assignments may change in accordance with facility needs.Minimum QualificationsHigh‑school diploma or equivalent AND at least eighteen months of experience in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates or in a psychiatric facility involving direct care of patients.Associate's degree or higher AND at least one year of experience in a correctional system.One year of military experience AND at least one year of experience in a correctional system.Physical and Mental RequirementsMental and physical condition appropriate to successfully perform the essential job functions, with or without reasonable accommodation.Criminal History RequirementsThe Department of Corrections does not hire any person convicted of a felony without a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections. Anyone under supervision or sanctioned for a misdemeanor conviction within the past five years is likewise ineligible without a waiver.PREA RequirementsIn accordance with federal regulation, applicants must provide relevant information.
