Exam DatesJuly 23-24, 2026Interview date August 10, 2026Position OverviewCommunications Dispatcher I works in the communication center of the Fresno County Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator's Office. Responsibilities include receiving and responding to emergency calls, keying call data, dispatching law enforcement personnel, referring calls per policy, and monitoring field units.Shift work in a 24‑hour, 7‑day operation is required. Overtime, nights, weekends, and holidays may be necessary.Note: Temporary (extra‑help) employees are paid hourly, are not entitled to benefits, and do not obtain permanent status. Permanent status may not be obtained in this classification. Employees must advance to Communications Dispatcher II within two years of hire or be rejected during the provisional appointment.QualificationsOPTION 1 – Education: Completion of 30 semester units from an accredited U.S. college or university.OPTION 2 – Experience: One year of full‑time paid experience obtaining information via telecommunications equipment and entering data on a computer.OPTION 3 – Certificate: Completion of the Public Safety Dispatcher's Basic Course certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training. The eligible list may be retained for up to 12 months and used for extra‑help and permanent positions.Background InvestigationAs a condition of employment, candidates must undergo and pass a thorough personal background investigation, medical examination, and polygraph or Computer Voice Stress Analysis examination. The investigation may include employment and credit histories, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct.
