Water/Sewer Leak Detection Technician

Job Description

Pay begins at $54,203.42 annually for a Water/Sewer Leak Detection Technician and is dependent upon applicable experience. In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus and a longevity bonus.

The purpose of this classification is to perform water leak detection functions as it relates to water loss and maintain zone metering points throughout the distribution system. Duties and responsibilities include water system leak detection; monitoring leak detection software; monitoring and maintaining zone metering points; valve maintenance; and following all safety guidelines set forth by municipal, state, and federal regulating authorities. Under general supervision, this classification is accountable to the Water/Sewer Supervisor.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Monitors and interprets leak detection software data to determine potential leaks in zones.
  • Investigates potential leaks using leak detection equipment to pinpoint leaks and reports to the Water/Sewer Supervisor.
  • Maintains zone meters and reports any issues to the Water/Sewer Supervisor.
  • Performs annual valve maintenance using a valve maintenance trailer.
  • Responds to customer/citizen leak complaints.
  • Maintains leak detection equipment and zone metering and reports any issues to the Water/Sewer Supervisor.
  • Maintains required leak detection records for water distribution and distributes to appropriate department personnel; ensures compliance with all applicable State and Federal regulations in the performance of duties.
  • Maintains knowledge of current safety policies, practices, and procedures related to the construction, maintenance and repair of water and wastewater appurtenances.
  • Locates water facilities under Tennessee One-Call regulations, as required by management.
  • Maintains on-call rotation status for after-hours work, as required by management.
  • Conducts behavior in a professional manner at all times to positively reflect on customers' perception of the Town.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of machines, work area, and facility. Reports incidents to the Water/Sewer Supervisor.
  • Performs and assists with duties and responsibilities of assigned personnel, as necessary.
  • Coordinates with GIS in mapping water and wastewater utilities.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have a High School diploma or GED.
  • Must have a valid Tennessee Driver's License.
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or obtain within twelve (12) months of hire date.
  • Must possess Grade II Distribution license or obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
  • Must possess and maintain Cross Connection certification or obtain within eighteen (18) months of hire date.
  • Must possess fork truck certification.
  • Must pass a hearing test
  • Must be able to meet the requirement of a 20-minute response time for emergencies in the Town.

  • Adherence to federal/state laws and regulations regarding MSDS, OSHA, and EPA compliance.

  • Must be available to respond to calls 24/7, when directed by the manager.
